GHJ is looking for a Core Tax Manager
Summary of Role: Our Tax Practice, comprised of over 100 professionals with post-graduate degrees and Big Four experience, is expanding its pass-through entity and private equity tax practice. This position will lead the preparation and review of complex federal, state, and local tax returns, providing sophisticated tax advice to privately-held businesses and ensuring the highest quality, timely delivery of all client work.
Youwill be responsible for:
- The efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all clients’ tax returns, personally or through supervision of others.
- Performing technical tax review and approval of all tax returns and responding to any governmental tax examinations.
- Assuming full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegating tasks to preparers as needed.
- Delegating, managing, and performing tax research projects to produce accurate results.
- Participating actively in client meetings and tax planning efforts with the Auditing and Accounting Department for larger clients.
- Acting as a resource for tax preparers and A&A staff on specific tax issues and questions.
- Coordinating with M&A, SALT, and ITS tax specialty teams on projects to deliver accurate products.
- Assisting and supervising tax preparers with more complex business returns.
- Assuming client service responsibility for the clients the tax manager works directly with or for whom responsibility is delegated from the partner.
- Communicating important tax developments to appropriate firm personnel.
- Maintaining familiarity with staff qualifications and reviewing assignments for appropriateness.
- Developing responsible, trained staff through recruiting, performance evaluation, training aids, and instruction in professional development programs.
- Ensuring smooth flow of tax returns through the preparation system, guaranteeing accurate, complete, and timely delivery.
- Possessing complete knowledge of the firm’s philosophy and opinions on tax matters.
- Staying informed of general economic and political trends that could affect tax legislation.
- Participating in practice development efforts via referral sources and community activities.
- Managing engagement profitability, including billings and collections.
- Participating in firm committees and management meetings.
- Proficiency in computer tax preparation, research, and planning software programs.
- Ability to operate a computer and calculator.
- Willingness to participate in the firm’s mentoring program.
- Performing such other duties as assigned.
- Participation in a career development program to improve managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including proven experience liaising with clients.
- Self‑starter with the ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field, and CPA certification.
- 5+ years of experience in tax at a public accounting firm or equivalent.
- Master’s in Taxation or a J.D. highly preferred for a tax management position.
- Minimum of 40 hours of continuing education annually to maintain and develop technical and business skills.
Salary Range: $135,000 - $160,000.
