Job Overview

The Tax Assistant Manager is responsible for managing and reviewing sales and use tax compliance, reconciliations, registrations, audits, and taxability support for multi-state retail and e-commerce operations. This role serves as a key reviewer and process owner for indirect tax compliance and also coordinates corporate income tax and tax provision matters handled by external service providers, including US GAAP/IFRS tax provision support, federal and state income tax return review, account reconciliations, and related documentation.

The position requires strong technical judgment, project management capability, cross-functional communication, and the ability to improve tax processes, controls, and documentation standards in a fast-paced retail environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manage and review sales and use tax compliance for retail stores and e-commerce operations across applicable state and local jurisdictions, ensuring timely and accurate filings and payments.
  • Review reconciliations of POS sales, exempt sales, returns, discounts, gift card activity, payment settlements, bank deposits, and general ledger balances to tax return work papers.
  • Oversee preparation and maintenance of sales and use tax return support, journal entries, account reconciliations, exemption certificates, audit-ready documentation, and internal control evidence.
  • Monitor nexus, registrations, permits, resale certificates, business licenses, and filing obligations for new store openings, relocations, closures, marketplace activity, and expansion into new jurisdictions.
  • Lead taxability analysis for retail products and transactions, including product tax codes, shipping charges, discounts, coupons, loyalty programs, samples, promotional items, and consumer use tax considerations.
  • Manage responses to sales and use tax audits, notices, refund claims, voluntary disclosure projects, and correspondence with taxing authorities, including coordination of supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Coordinate with external service providers and review corporate income tax compliance deliverables, including federal and state income tax work papers, estimated tax payments, apportionment, book-to-tax adjustments, tax depreciation, and related account reconciliations.
  • Review and support quarterly and annual US GAAP/IFRS tax provision prepared with external advisors, including current/deferred tax, effective tax rate, uncertain tax positions, and provision-to-return true-up analysis.
  • Partner with accounting, treasury, store operations, IT/POS, e-commerce, external advisors, and tax technology providers to improve tax processes, data quality, controls, and filing efficiency.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, develop tax compliance calendars and review checklists, and support automation initiatives for retail tax reporting and reconciliation workflows.
  • Provide guidance and review support to junior tax/accounting staff, including workpaper review, issue escalation, documentation standards, and deadline management.
  • Perform other tax compliance, accounting, reporting, and special projects as assigned.
