Role DescriptionThis is a full-time on-site role in Los Angeles for a Lead Structural Costume Engineer.
This role goes beyond sewing and tailoring. We are seeking a specialist capable of designing and fabricating sculptural
, load-bearing costume structures that integrate lightweight framing systems, wearable harnesses, custom corsetry, and architectural silhouettes.
The ideal candidate understands the intersection of couture craftsmanship and theatrical engineering.
Responsibilities- Designing and fabricating structural wearable forms (domes, halos, frames)
- Developing internal support systems for headpieces and rigid silhouettes
- Collaborating with designers to translate conceptual renderings into real, physically stable builds
- Working with lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, acrylic, EVA foam, and reinforced textiles
- Ensuring weight distribution, mobility, and performer safety
- Overseeing fittings and structural testing
- Managing fabrication timelines and coordinating with production teams
- 5+ years in costume engineering, opera/ballet fabrication, couture atelier, or scenic fabrication
- Experience with rigid structural builds (not only soft garment sewing)
- Strong understanding of load distribution and wearable support systems
- Experience integrating lighting or electronic elements into garments is a plus
- Background in theatrical, opera, Cirque du Soleil, or couture-level fabrication strongly preferred
- Degree in Costume Design, Theatrical Production, Industrial Design, or equivalent professional experience
- $5K–$25K per build
