Salary Range: $62 - $67 hourly + overtime x 1/2
Type: Full-Time

The Mechanical Inspector will support LAWA’s construction inspection and work as a member of LAWA Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA’s Capital Improvement Program.

• Current ICC certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
• Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training within the last 4 years.
• LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
• Ability to work any assigned shift - day, swing, or night.
• Mechanical inspection staff shall have 3 years or more experience performing mechanical inspections for Building Construction.
• Thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration installations.
• Fall protection and harness training.

• Additional current ICC certification as a Commercial Plumbing Inspector.
• NFPA 70E standards training within the last 3 years.
• Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) progressing into inspection.
• Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large-scale commercial, industrial or public buildings.
• Confined Space Entry Training.
• Experience overseeing and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
• Involvement in complex projects that require coordination with multiple stakeholders, including contractors, engineers, and city officials.
• Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring all aspects of construction meet required standards.
• Open to learning the prescriptive items required by the agency.
• Strong understanding of diverse code requirements (CBC & CMC).
• Excellent communication and time management skills.

• Inspect the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements and utility projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements for work.
• Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications.
• Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
• Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities.
• Verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA-specific standards.
• Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities.
• Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
• Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies as needed.
• Perform inspections of Mechanical and Plumbing installations including:
  • Domestic Water and Sewage Systems
  • Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping
  • HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork)
  • Smoke Control Systems
  • Mechanical ventilation and exhaust
  • Fire and life safety integration (e.g., smoke dampers)
  • Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures
  • Commissioning and balancing reports
  • Underground utilities
  • Fire life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors and FM-200 suppression systems

• Knowledge of Project Management Information Software used for inspection/document control (e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam).
• Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents efficiently, including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and other inspection documents, with minimal supervision.

• High school diploma (or equivalent).

• May assume other duties as required/needed.
• Must work various shifts, including day, swing, and night.
• Will be open to modified schedules, including nights and weekends, as dictated by the contractors' work activities and accelerated project schedules.
• Availability to work overtime as required to meet project deadlines and ensure timely completion of tasks is preferred.
