Definition of the PositionIncumbents are licensed physicians in immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit or a small program of a medical facility. The position requires assignment to a County jail health facility for physicians in Family Practice or Internal Medicine – General/Endocrinology. Additional compensation is provided: 5.5 % of the stepped E Salary for the assigned step, or a flat‑rate monthly bonus for other specialties, based on certification.
SpecialSalary Information
- Correctional Health Services (CHS) works with the Sheriff’s Department to coordinate medical, behavioral health and substance abuse services to inmates.
- Physicians in Family Practice or Internal Medicine – General/Endocrinology continuously assigned to a County jail health facility receive additional compensation of 5.5 % of the step on the appropriate E Schedule.
- Senior Physicians (Item No. 5456) with certification in one specialty receive an additional bonus equal to 5.5 % of the step on the appropriate E Schedule.
- Due to manpower shortage, Family Practice and Internal Medicine – Endocrinology incumbents are compensated at Step 10.

Essential Job Functions- Perform administrative duties – preparing budgets, determining equipment needs, addressing personnel issues, revising procedures, and screening work.
- Formulate policies and plans; direct medical work of the section or assist a division of a medical department.
- Examine, diagnose, and prescribe treatment; review care prescribed by staff physicians, residents, and interns.
- Participate in training interns and resident physicians.
- Coordinate the section’s work with other medical and paramedical services.
- Consult with consultants regarding patient care and coordinate their work with the section.
- Supervise maintenance of records and compilation and preparation of reports.
- Selection Requirements: Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties and one year of experience in medical practice, postgraduate training, teaching, or investigative work.
- License: California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
- Valid California Class C Driver License or alternative transportation method to carry out essential functions.
- Physical Class III: Moderate – standing or walking most of the time, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching; work on irregular surfaces; occasional lifting over 25 lb.; frequent lifting of 10–25 lb.
- Special Requirements: Certification may be designated in one or more of the following specialties:
Family Practice;
Internal Medicine – General/Endocrinology.
