Position: Native American and Indigenous Student Success Center (NAISSC) Director

Overview

The Native American and Indigenous Student Success Center (NAISSC) was established by the Chancellor’s Native American and Pacific Islander Bruins Rising Initiative in alignment with UCLA’s designation as an AANAPISI-serving institution. The NAISSC will offer timely, effective, and supportive holistic services for undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree Native students  NAISSC is housed in the American Indian Studies Center (AISC), though its physical location may be in another part of the campus, and will coordinate with the AISC, as well as the Department of American Indian Studies (DAIS), on student academic success matters.

The NAISSC will work directly with Native and Indigenous student organizations on campus, including but not limited to AISA, AISES, AIGSA, and NALSA, as well as work with other Native identifying students not involved in these organizations and their sponsored programs and projects. The NAISSC will support these students through community-building events, student organization networking, resources, counseling, outreach, training, consultation, and advocacy.

Position Summary

The Native American and Indigenous Student Success Center Director, working independently under the general direction of the Director of the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) at UCLA, is responsible for the strategic direction and operations to successfully lead an exemplary Native American and Indigenous Student Success Center (NAISSC). The individual engages with undergraduate, graduate, and professional school Native students by establishing and maintaining effective networks and collaborations with on- and off-campus partners (including but not limited to faculty, staff, and alumni) to implement the vision, mission, and goals of the campus and the NAISSC.

The Director manages the NAISSC's physical, financial, and staff resources, assessments, and funding opportunities to advocate for and advance efforts to cultivate the academic and cultural wellness of Native students. The Director will oversee the long-term development, management, direction, and evaluation of UCLA's first NAISSC.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Qualifications
  • Fundraising Experience with acquiring external funding, cultivating relationships with possible donors, and working knowledge of grant resources to support the Native community (Preferred) And
  • UC Policy Knowledge of university policy and procedures, including policies governing the use of university funds and facilities, as well as those governing development efforts (Preferred) And
  • Higher education Professional experience working with college students in a public university setting (Preferred) And
  • Higher Education Experience working in Higher Education/Student Affairs (Preferred) And
  • Knowledge of current issues regarding the Native student population (i.e., current local, state, and federal laws and policies impacting Native students in higher education). Ability to design, implement, and evaluate programs and support services that address these issues. (Required)
  • Knowledge of social justice concepts, practices, and experience in articulating the intersections of identities. Cultural competency to advocate on behalf of underrepresented communities. (Required)
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, administrators, family members, and the general community. Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives. (Required)
  • Strong emotional, cultural, and interpersonal skills, and political acumen to interact with individuals of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives. Experience working in a multicultural environment and skills to communicate, interact, and work with diverse constituencies. (Required)
  • Expert skill in listening, counseling, mediating, and referring students to appropriate offices or agencies to resolve problems. Experience with student development, support, and retention strategies, multicultural organizational change, multicultural education, and leadership development (Required)
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate meetings, prepare and deliver professional presentations, and convey complex ideas to diverse audiences. Skills acting as a spokesperson. (Required)
