Salary Range: $17.87 per hour.
Work Schedule: This is a part-time position;
Monday - Thursday; and occasional Fridays. Hours to be determined; 15-20 hours per week;
Non-exempt position. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Essential Functions:
A Peer Leader is a student who serves to support and guide their college peers to successful and timely degree completion. Peer Leaders are able to work well with others and are able to contribute effectively as part of a team. They are also able to work independently and balance a busy schedule with support from their supervisor. Peer Leaders are embedded into a stretch First Year English Stretch course (e.i
English 1005A and ENGL 1005B).
Peer leaders' goal is to build connection and community inside and outside of the classroom. They will introduce First-Year Students to the SOAR curriculum:
Strengthen your study skills, own your education, Advance your degree, Realize your future. Make connections with each other and learn how to set SMART goals. At the same time, they will create social opportunities that promote student-to-student connection, and develop a sense of belonging and leverage campus events and resources.
Duties:
- Attend assigned First-Year English course:
Facilitate conversation, facilitate activities, be an active resource in the classroom - Connect with assigned students through in person and email to deliver Peer Leader curriculum
- Help students with topics such as:
- Time Management
- Campus Engagement
- Study strategies
- Communicating with faculty and advisors
- Connecting with other students
- Make appropriate referrals to necessary campus resources
- Will attend trainings, meetings, and workshops with coordinator and university partners
- Other duties as assigned
The Peer Leader must be a student currently attending Cal State LA. Peer Leaders must possess a 3.00 GPA or better. Peer Leaders should enjoy working as part of a team and be interested in developing their leadership and organizational skills. Peer Leaders must demonstrate sensitivity to students and their needs, and be able to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment with students from all backgrounds.
Fingerprinting will be taken and checked by the California Department of Justice and the FBI. The incumbent may be responsible for the fingerprinting processing fee. A completed UAS employment application is required.
Desired Qualifications:
Strong academic performance, good writing and people/social skills, as well as an ability to be flexible and mentor undergraduate students.
The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or the continued employment of current UAS employees who apply for the position.
