Purpose

The Special Education Assistant assists the classroom teacher and school service providers by providing academic and behavioral support to an individual student or group of students.

A Special Education Paraprofessional aids individual and small groups of students with academic and behavioral challenges in and outside of the classroom under the supervision of a Resource Specialist Teacher, General Education Teacher, and/or Behavior Intervention Case Manager (BICM) or certified School Psychologist.

The role includes implementing Individualized Education Plans and/or behavior plans, tracking data daily to inform IEP goals, and collaborating with diverse student populations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist student(s) in following classroom routines, staying on-task, and completing assignments independently.
  • Clarify, rephrase, and repeat teacher instructions as needed.
  • Collaborate with teachers in weekly lesson planning and instructional differentiation.
  • Assist with behavioral support, including data collection, reinforcement of positive behavior, sensory breaks, and consistent consequences for challenging behaviors.
  • Use Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NCI), Love and Logic, and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) strategies to prevent and modify maladaptive behavior.
  • Assist students with fine motor tasks and mobility, as required.
  • Work one-to-one with students who have behavior challenges, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other learning disabilities.
  • Facilitate academic, emotional, and social skill development as outlined in IEPs and Behavior Support Plans.
  • Collect academic and behavioral data.
  • Attend in-service training sessions.
  • Use software to monitor timelines, service delivery, and data collection.
Experience

At least six months working with special needs children and familiarity with autism spectrum disorders, ABA, Floor Time, and Discrete Trial Training.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills.

  • Prior experience working with children.
  • Patience, creativity, motivation, and enthusiasm towards children.
  • Ethical, reliable, diligent, and ability to work well in a team.
  • Comfortable taking initiative and direction from others.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Physical capability to run short distances, sit on floor, bend, squat, kneel, and twist.
  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.
  • Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) preferred.
Qualifications

Consistent with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and related legislation, candidates must meet the following standards:

  • Equivalent to high school graduation and at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at a higher education institution.
  • OR attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher.
  • Completion of coursework in child development, education, and/or psychology at an accredited institution desirable.
  • Verification will be required for high school graduation, college units, and degrees.
Education/Training

Completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education or an Associate of Arts degree or higher is required. Coursework in child development, education, and/or psychology is desirable.
