Instructional Faculty – Part-time Temporary/Lecturer Pool

The Curriculum and Instruction Department in the College of Education at Cal State LA is seeking applications for a pool of part‑time faculty lecturers with positions available as determined by need during the 2026‑2027 academic year. Positions will be filled as needed for each academic semester.

Part‑time faculty lecturers are hired with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Hires are made when there are instructional needs to fill coursework offered by an academic department based on changing enrollment patterns, changes to tenure‑track faculty assignments, and other factors that cannot be addressed with existing faculty. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, but occasionally academic‑year initial appointments are made.

Appointments may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance. Often appointments are made just prior to the start of the semester so some faculty lecturers may need to be available on very short notice.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidate must have an appropriate degree from an accredited university (master’s or doctoral degree), hold a California teaching credential or equivalent, and have several years of experience teaching in K‑12 urban school settings. Lecturers hired to regularly teach credential courses must be qualified in the credential area through either training, credential/license, or experience teaching in the public schools. Faculty assigned to regularly teach credential courses must maintain, at minimum, participation in public schools once every three years.

Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student‑centered learning and teaching. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Relevant work experience and training.
  • Previous experience teaching at the university level.
  • Experience teaching in online, hybrid, and face‑to‑face classes and familiarity with online class‑management systems.
Duties

Duties of part‑time faculty lecturers include instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours. Other duties may be assigned based on departmental needs. Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

Lecturers will teach courses in their area of expertise. Most courses are taught in the late afternoon and evening, with some programs offering courses during the day as well. Candidates will also collaborate with faculty to maintain consistency throughout the program.

They are expected to support the academic success of all students and to work in an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences.

Compensation

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary schedule (as of 7/1/2024):

  • Lecturer A/2: $5,507 - $6,677 per month
  • Lecturer B/3: $6,221 - $13,224 per month
  • Lecturer C/4: $6,825 - $14,523 per month
  • Lecturer D/5: $8,593 - $15,211 per month

Anticipated monthly hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Most new faculty lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.
