Campus Minister For Sacramental Life And Christian Initiation

Reporting to the Director of Campus Ministry, the Campus Minister for Sacramental Life and Christian Initiation holds dedicated responsibility for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and for the sacramental preparation of the Loyola Marymount University community, across the full arc of the academic and liturgical year. The position serves as the catechist for the initiation program. This position does not carry supervisory responsibility for staff.

The work follows the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults across each of its four periods:
Evangelization and Precatechumenate, the Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogy. The position works in close partnership with the Campus Minister for Liturgy and the Campus Minister for Retreats as peers, with neither position supervising the other, and collaborates with the Director of Campus Ministry, the Campus Minister for Catholic Student Life, presiders drawn from the Jesuit Community and the wider Church, Saint Anastasia Catholic Parish, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Coordinate the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults across its four periods, from initial inquiry through the celebration of the sacraments and the period of reflection that follows.
  • Serve as the catechist for the program, designing and delivering the catechetical curriculum in dialogue with the Sunday lectionary and the liturgical year, and selecting catechetical resources in consultation with the Director of Campus Ministry.
  • Accompany inquirers, catechumens, and candidates individually, and prepare sponsors and godparents for their role in the initiation journey.
  • Prepare and coordinate the celebration of the rites of initiation in partnership with the Campus Minister for Liturgy, and serve as the Campus Ministry liaison to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the Rite of Election.
  • Prepare those baptized in another Christian tradition, and baptized Catholic students who have not completed initiation, for reception into full communion, Confirmation, and First Eucharist.
  • Design and lead retreats and days of reflection belonging to the initiation journey, in partnership with the Campus Minister for Retreats.
  • Coordinate the wider sacramental life of the University community, including opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, infant and child baptisms, and requests for pastoral sacramental care.
  • Conduct marriage preparation for couples marrying in University worship spaces, including the required catechesis and canonical documentation.
  • Serve as the Campus Ministry point of contact with Saint Anastasia Catholic Parish, with which the University files its official sacramental records, and maintain accurate, complete, and confidential sacramental records and documentation.
  • Administer the program budget within the allocation approved by the Director of Campus Ministry, and support communication and outreach for sacramental preparation opportunities.
  • Participate as an active member of the Campus Ministry team and the University worshipping community, sustain professional currency in the theology and practice of Christian initiation, and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Ministry.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or pastoral ministry, or equivalent experience in adult catechesis. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to excel in the role.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in catechesis, adult faith formation, parish ministry, or campus ministry.
  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.
