COWAN AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL, ELEMENTARY

The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding elementary Principal to lead the students, staff, families, and community of Cowan Elementary School toward continued academic growth and success. Cowan Elementary School is a single-track, school wide Title I school serving approximately 390 students in grades TK–5. The student population is approximately 60% African American/Black, 20% Hispanic/Latino. Of the total enrollment, approximately 13% of students are English Learners.

Cowan Elementary offers a Dual Language World Immersion Program and a Gifted International Humanities Magnet for grades 1-6. The school is committed to providing students with STEM, GATE, and World Language Immersion opportunities to pursue an educational pathway to satisfy individual aptitudes and interests. The school strives to serve as a hub for students and families by strengthening academic achievement, student wellness, family engagement, and community partnerships.

The school staff includes 22classroom teachers, an APEIS, a Title 1/Magnet Coordinator, a Math Instructional Coach, a Restorative Justice Teacher, and itinerant support staff. The school is located at 7615 Cowan Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90045.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

will be a student-centered, instructionally focused, collaborative, and equity-driven leader who has a firm belief that all students can achieve at high levels. The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to lead a diverse elementary school community that includes English Learners, Students with Disabilities, students in a Dual Language World Immersion Program, GATE students, and students with a range of academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs.

The Ideal Candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Lead high-quality instruction by supporting standards-aligned teaching and learning, effective implementation of District curriculum, differentiated instruction, and meaningful feedback to teachers through classroom observations, coaching, and professional learning.
  • Use data to improve student outcomes by analyzing multiple measures of student progress, identifying trends and areas of need, monitoring interventions, and leading staff in data-informed instructional planning.
  • Strengthening collaborative leadership by building trust, developing shared responsibility, and engaging teachers, staff, families, students, and community partners through structures such as Instructional Leadership Teams, professional learning communities, and school-based decision-making teams.
  • Promote an inclusive and positive school culture by supporting restorative practices, School wide Positive Behavior Support and social-emotional learning.
  • Manage school operations effectively by aligning resources, staffing, budgets, and programs to school priorities while maintaining clear communication, organization, and accountability.
SALARY:

40G - E Basis ($123,618 - $153,961) – 234 paid days

  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
  • For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or over payment).
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
  • Eight years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
  • A minimum of two years of experience in an elementary school
  • Two years of service in a position that required and utilized an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position.

Employees who have been issued a below standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process
