- Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements in consultation with UCLA Extension Program Director and Program Manager.
- Use subject‑matter expertise to impart knowledge to students and arrange guest speakers.
- Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to engage participants and reinforce learning.
- Update materials periodically and monitor course evaluations to improve curriculum.
- Utilize Canvas as a course support platform in in‑person and online courses.
- Post final student grades to the transcript system within two weeks of course end.
- Respond to student questions within 24 hours.
- Communicate with Program Director and Program Staff in a timely manner.
- Complete required administrative tasks and submit paperwork, syllabus updates, bio and photo, textbook orders, and other classroom needs.
- Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs.
- Assist in occasional program activities such as competition judging, guest lecturing, community events, and script consultations.
- Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies and inclusive teaching strategies for domestic and international students.
- Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of instruction.
- Maintain a record of final grades for up to 13 months after the last class session.
- Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.
- Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in subject area.
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
- Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional technology and online teaching tools.
- College‑level and/or continuing education teaching experience preferred.
- Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance preferred.
- Creative Writing – documented publications (books, periodicals, literary magazines) and recent publications preferred; prior teaching experience preferred. Specializations:
Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Writing for Young Readers. - Screenwriting – documented produced scripts (features, teleplays, etc.) and recent productions preferred; prior teaching experience preferred. Specializations:
Features, Television, Graphic novels, Podcasting, Video game writing/Narrative design. - Editing & Publishing – documented professional experience as publisher staff (excluding self‑publishing) and recent experience preferred; prior teaching experience preferred. Specializations:
Copyediting, Developmental editing, Editorial management. - Written Communication – prior teaching experience in English composition at college level and advanced degree (Master’s or higher). Specializations:
Expository Writing, Persuasive Writing.
- Curriculum Vitae/Resume – most recent CV/Resume including publications/productions, professional experience, and teaching/public‑speaking experience.
- Cover Letter – identifying the area of writing applied for and discussing interest in teaching for UCLA Extension.
Applicants will be hired on a quarterly contract basis. Compensation details are provided in the posting. Instructors must meet formal academic approval to teach a course. All instructors adhere to UCLA policies and collective bargaining agreements.
