Reporting to the Director of Career Education & Outcomes, and ultimately to the Assistant Vice Provost for Career and Professional Development, the Assistant Director for STEM Professions will provide career coaching to students primarily interested in engineering, science, and technology, serving as liaison to Seaver College of Science & Engineering.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Provide one-on-one career coaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, with particular focus on students within the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering (FSCSE) and students interested in STEM professions.
  • Implement workshops, information sessions, employer site visits, and industry panels to introduce students to a wide range of professionals and careers.
  • Partner with Seaver College’s faculty, departments, and other units across campus to develop and support career and professional development programming.
  • In partnership with FSCSE and key CPD staff, coordinate large-scale signature networking events for students considering careers in STEM industries.
  • Collaborate with alumni stakeholders to shape event goals, identify and recruit alumni committee members, and select speakers.
  • Cultivate student interest and provide post-event programming that encourages action toward career goals.
  • Cultivate and maintain employer and alumni relationships that benefit student and young alumni career readiness.
  • Connect with employers and alumni to cultivate experiential opportunities.
  • Promote opportunities to students, faculty, parents, and campus partners.
  • Manage undergraduate student staff and/or Graduate Assistants with an interest in supporting science and engineering students.
  • Train, mentor, and guide student staff in developing content for workshops, webpages, and event management.
  • Collaborate with student staff to host career panels, employer information sessions, and career readiness programs.
  • Teach courses related to internship and job preparedness for students focused on STEM professions.
  • Contribute fully to the career services profession, representing the university through involvement in national and regional professional associations, and in strategic partnerships with LMU employers, alumni, parents, and other external stakeholders.
  • Serve as an active contributor for the Division of Enrollment Management, Career, and Professional Development, participating in campus-wide events and committees as requested.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with staff, faculty and campus partners across the university.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to outstanding customer service, and a work ethic of efficiency and courtesy consistent with the University’s mission.

Requisite Qualifications
  • Typically a Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
  • Minimum of three years academic advising, career development/counseling or coaching students within the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field or related area.
  • Preferred experience working with undergraduate students; familiarity with career development/counseling theories and methods; specialized knowledge of the science and technology fields, and management or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career development/counseling theories and methods.
  • Knowledge of education career fields and opportunities for experiential learning.
  • Knowledge of the academic environment and experiential learning best practices.
