Job Description & How to Apply Below
Appointment Type and Details This full-time, 9-month tenure-track academic appointment (August – May) has an annual salary paid over 12 consecutive months, allowing for continuous benefits coverage. We welcome teacher-scholars with doctoral degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, or other cognate interdisciplinary fields; candidates with PhDs in other social science and humanities disciplines with designated emphases in the areas outlined above will also be considered.
The PhD is required; however, ABD applicants who complete the doctorate by Fall 2027 will also be considered.
Position Responsibilities The Women’s and Gender Studies Department in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University seeks a scholar with a background in social science research and expertise in one or more of the following fields:
Black feminism, decolonial or postcolonial studies, environmental justice/queer ecology, or militarism. The applicant would be expected to teach introduction level courses in Women’s and Gender Studies, a course in feminist and queer research methods, as well as an upper division course in the applicant’s area of expertise. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching and research can contribute to the department’s affiliated interdisciplinary minors, Disability Studies and LGBTQ Studies.
Faculty responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarship, teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students, and contributing to department and university service. Department tenure-track faculty members typically teach on a two-year 2-2-2-3 course rotation (4-unit classes) on a 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service model.
Successful candidates will embrace the department’s mission of fostering a vigorous intellectual environment through a feminist and queer interdisciplinary lens where students can develop their analytical thinking skills and conceptual tools for social change. Successful candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student and community populations. We welcome applicants whose work speaks to issues of social justice as well as to antiracist and inclusive pedagogies.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to LMU’s teacher-scholar model. A teacher-scholar conducts research and does creative work that contributes to the larger body of knowledge while setting an example for the importance of lifelong learning. A teacher-scholar at LMU is dedicated to
1) teaching a diverse student body in a transformative learning environment,
2) developing a thriving portfolio in research/scholarship/creative works and mentoring students,
3) participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels, and
4) working towards greater equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility for all in the profession. For more information about our current faculty, please visit Join Our Faculty
