AY27 - COUNSELOR, GENERAL – Rising Scholars/JUVENILE JUSTICE SCHOLARS), SFP (LIMITED)

1.0 FTE D-Basis (12-Month) Temporary Assignment

Announcement:

East Los Angeles College (ELAC) is hiring a faculty member to serve as the in person Counselor, General –
Rising Scholars(RS)/ Juvenile Justice Scholars (JJS). RS/ JJS provides wrap around support services for justice-involved students who are currently or formerly incarcerated. The RS/JJS Counselor will assist with program development efforts and assist with planning and coordination of the RS/ JJS under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services or their designee. This is a 12-month, D-basis, 1.0 FTE limited, temporary counselor position.

This position is limited to the period of the Juvenile Justice Program funding which is from FY . This position requires the Counselor to work at the Monterey Park and/or Southeast Campus as well as off site at various detention facilities and support the overall Los Angeles County Service Areas related to partnerships with ELAC’s Rising Scholars/Juvenile Justice Progras.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or higher in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational counseling, guidance counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling
  • OR the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students and familiarity with issues related to student equity.

NOTE:

A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range is $100,944 -$180,192 commensurate with academic preparation and experience for new employees. The doctoral differential is $487 per month. District benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive face-to-face and online academic and career counseling to Juvenile Justice Scholars (JJS) student population, primarily on-site at the juvenile hall, but also on-campus; including interpreting the college catalog, schedule of classes and articulation agreements.
  • Assist students in choosing and planning immediate and long-range educational goals, including the development of abbreviated and comprehensive student education plans to help students stay on the path to completion.
  • Conduct new student college orientations to familiarize students with college programs and services, student success workshops, and presentations for new and continuing students.
  • Engage students in a process of self-assessment and career exploration to facilitate career decision-making skills, in collaboration with Career counselors
  • Counsel students, both in groups and individually, who are on probation or subject to dismissal and assist them in creating a plan for success.
  • Evaluate transcripts in collaboration with Articulation Officer.
  • Collaborate with instructional faculty across disciplines in joint projects designed to increase retention and student success.
  • Maintain currency in the discipline, including use of technology, as well as participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, and membership in professional organizations.
  • Represent the department in college decision-making activities related to academic and professional matters by participating in counseling departmental meetings, shared governance committees, and other campus initiatives.
