Overview

A Civil Engineering Drafting Technician performs drafting using a Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) system and other tools in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, and maps.

Salary

Annual salary ranges are provided by department: LA World Airports and Harbor Department: $75,481 to $110,350;
Department of Water and Power: $89,136 to $120,373 (example ranges shown in the original posting; final starting salary at the discretion of the department).

Responsibilities

A Civil Engineering Drafting Technician performs drafting using a CADD system and other tools in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, and maps.

  • Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units in Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and completion of one course in Geometry and Trigonometry from a high school, accredited college, university, trade school, or technical school; or
  • Two years of full-time paid engineering drafting experience which includes one year of engineering drafting experience and one year of experience using a CADD system.

  • Applicants qualifying under Requirement No. 1 must list their school name and location, appropriate course titles, their respective number of semester or quarter units, and completion dates for each course claimed as qualifying in the text box which will appear in the Supplemental Questions section of the on-line application.
  • A combination of course work and experience will not be accepted as meeting the requirements.
  • The position of Civil Engineering Drafting Technician requires, as a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California DMV. Applicants will be disqualified if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI or DWI.
  • For Internal Use Only:
    Licensing verification will occur at the time of appointment.
  • Qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency.
  • Candidates completing the examination process will be contacted to provide required proof of qualifying course work.
Selective Certification

In accordance with Charter Section 1010 (b) and Civil Service Rule 5.31, selective certification may be used for positions that require special skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, ArcGIS, Autodesk Revit, Bentley Suite Applications, and/or Micro Station. Only persons possessing these skills at the time of filing may be considered for appointment.

  • Applicants who have proficiency in these tools must indicate this on their City application to be eligible for selective certification.
  • Applicants may be required to participate in a performance test at the time of certification to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the listed systems.
  • Most positions will require experience in either AutoCAD or Micro Station.
