Position: CIVIL ENGINEERING DRAFTING TECHNICIAN 7232 (C) (REVISED 07-31-2025)

Overview

A Civil Engineering Drafting Technician performs drafting using a Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) system and other tools in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, and maps.

Salary

ANNUAL SALARY: $67,922 to $99,305. The salary in the Los Angeles World Airports and the Harbor Department is $74,019 to $108,179. The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $86,714 to $107,719; $90,306 to $112,209; $92,206 to $114,547; $94,231 to $117,095.

Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions. Responsibilities

A Civil Engineering Drafting Technician performs drafting using a Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) system and other tools in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, and maps.

Qualifications / Requirements
  • Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units in Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and completion of one course in Geometry and Trigonometry from a high school, accredited college, university, trade school, or technical school; or
  • Two years of full-time paid engineering drafting experience which includes one year of engineering drafting experience and one year of experience using a CADD system.

  • Applicants qualifying under the first requirement must list their school name and location, appropriate course titles, units, and completion dates for each qualifying course in the Supplemental Questions section of the online application.
  • A combination of coursework and experience will not be accepted as meeting the requirements.
  • A valid Class C driver’s license is required at the time of appointment for Civil Engineering Drafting Technician positions in the Department of Water and Power and the Public Works/Bureau of Sanitation. DMV records in the last 36 months with multiple moving violations or major violations may affect eligibility.
  • Qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency. A list of approved accrediting agencies can be found in the reference document.
  • Applicants completing the examination process will be contacted by the Personnel Department to provide required proof of qualifying coursework. You may attach qualifying coursework to your online application in the Attachments section to expedite review.
  • Selective Certification

    In accordance with Charter Section 1010 (b) and Civil Service Rule 5.31, selective certification may be used for positions requiring special skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, ArcGIS, Autodesk Revit, Bentley Suite Applications, and/or Micro Station. Only applicants with these skills at filing may be considered for such appointments.

  • Applicants with proficiency in these tools must indicate it on their City application to be eligible for selective certification.
  • Applicants may be required to participate in a performance test at certification time to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the listed tools.
  • Most filled positions are anticipated to require experience in either AutoCAD or Micro Station.
