The PT Assistant Engineer supports the Chief Engineer in maintaining the technical operations of multiple radio broadcast facilities. This position is responsible for assisting with the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of broadcast transmitters, studio systems, IT/network infrastructure, and associated technical equipment. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, technically skilled, and capable of responding independently to equipment and system issues in both studio and transmitter site environments.
On-Call Availability: Required for broadcast emergencies and critical outages
Stations Supported: Multiple AM/FM/HD Radio Stations
Status: Part-Time / Flexible Hours
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssist the Chief Engineer with the daily operation and maintenance of AM/FM/HD broadcast facilities and transmitter sites.
Monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair broadcast transmitters, antenna systems, STL links, audio processing equipment, automation systems, codecs, consoles, and related broadcast infrastructure.
Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections of technical equipment and facilities.
Respond to off-hours technical emergencies and equipment outages to restore broadcast service as quickly as possible.
Review and maintain station operating logs, including EAS systems, tower lighting, and FCC-required documentation.
Support FCC compliance efforts at studio and transmitter locations.
Install, configure, and maintain IT systems including network switches, workstations, printers, backups, and IP audio networking equipment.
Assist with engineering projects including equipment installations, software updates, infrastructure improvements, and facility upgrades.
Set up and support remote broadcasts, special events, and transmission links.
Coordinate with tower crews, vendors, contractors, and regulatory agencies as necessary.
Maintain station vehicles and assist with repair and upkeep of promotional and remote broadcast equipment.
Provide technical support to station personnel and assist users with computer and operational issues as needed.
Maintain safe working conditions at transmitter sites, including OSHA and site safety compliance.
Required QualificationsMinimum 2 years of broadcast engineering, RF engineering, or related technical experience.
Strong understanding of FCC regulations and broadcast compliance requirements.
Hands-on experience with AM/FM/HD transmitters, RF systems, and audio signal flow.
Familiarity with automation systems, digital audio workstations, and studio equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot technical problems independently and efficiently.
Experience using standard electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and multimeters.
Knowledge of computer networking, IP audio systems, and broadcast-related IT infrastructure.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation and acceptable driving record.
Preferred QualificationsSBE Certification (CBTE, CBRE, or higher) preferred.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Broadcast Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
Experience with AES
67, Dante, Wheat Net, Livewire, or other IP audio systems.
Familiarity with HD Radio and digital broadcast workflows.
Experience with automation systems such as Wide Orbit, RCS, Zetta, or similar platforms.
Knowledge of microwave systems, streaming encoders, fiber connectivity, and remote-control systems.
Physical Requirements & Working ConditionsAbility to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and operate in confined spaces.
Comfortable working outdoors and at remote transmitter sites in varying weather conditions.
Position requires occasional nights, weekends, and holiday work for maintenance and emergency response.
Travel between station and transmitter locations is required.
