Director of Environmental Planning
Micheal Baker International is seeking a Director of Environmental Planning to support and drive the firm’s continued growth in Los Angeles. This senior-level role blends technical leadership, project delivery, marketing, proposal development, and business development, and is ideal for a strategic leader who thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment.
The successful candidate will be a motivated self‑starter who can work independently while also leading and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across Michael Baker’s local and national offices.
What You’ll Do- Drive business development and client engagement with Los Angeles‑area agencies and key clients
- Provide technical leadership and strategic oversight for the CEQA/NEPA process through regulatory project approvals
- Support and lead marketing and proposal pursuits in coordination with local and national teams
- Provide leadership and mentorship to 10-15 staff members
- Coordinate project delivery efforts with environmental, planning, and technical teams across Michael Baker offices
- Represent Michael Baker at client meetings, public hearings, community outreach, and stakeholder engagements
- Actively engage in industry events and leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Planning, Ecology, or a related field
- 15+ years of experience preferred (candidates with fewer years but exceptional qualifications will be considered)
- Strong understanding of the Los Angeles market, with existing agency and/or client relationships preferred
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Excellent written, verbal, and analytical communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi‑disciplinary team environment
- Demonstrated commitment to producing high‑quality work and quickly adapting to company policies, procedures, and tools
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
- Flexible work schedule, supporting a hybrid work environment and work‑life balance with ability to be in the Los Angeles office and/or Long Beach office
- Ability to travel locally throughout Los Angeles County for meetings, project support, outreach, and public hearings
The approximate compensation range for this position $210,000 – 275,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
