The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Architect to support campus-wide facility documentation, site investigations, and infrastructure planning across a large healthcare system.
This role is ideal for an architect who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, technical documentation, and complex facility environments
, with the opportunity to directly impact spaces serving our nation’s Veterans.
The Architect will work under the direction of the Section Chief to independently plan and execute architectural documentation and site investigation efforts across a multi-building medical campus.
You will play a key role in documenting existing conditions, utilities, and building systems
, ensuring accuracy for future planning, construction, and facility improvements.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive architectural and engineering documentation for all campus buildings and utilities
- Produce detailed AutoCAD and Revit drawings, including:
- Floor plans, elevations, and reflected ceiling plans
- Building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
- Maintain accurate drawing layers and standards aligned with building codes and system components
- Interpret and review plans for compliance with VA standards (TIL, ABAAS, ICC, OSHA, Life Safety)
- Conduct on-site investigations across a 100+ acre campus with 20+ buildings
- Identify discrepancies between existing conditions and construction documents
- Capture detailed field notes and incorporate findings into updated drawings
- Perform measurements and create scaled drawings based on real-world conditions
- Maintain and update architectural drawing files and documentation systems
- Upload and coordinate drawings with external contractor platforms
- Track facility changes including renovations, moves, and space reassignments
- Organize and manage drawing archives, project binders, and documentation libraries
- Identify and support projects related to facility upgrades and infrastructure improvements
- Contribute to planning efforts for:
- Building renovations and interior upgrades
- Utilities (water, wastewater, storm drainage)
- Roads and site infrastructure
- Assist in resolving complex design and documentation challenges
- Collaborate with Engineering, Contracting, Logistics, EMS, OI&T, and other stakeholders
- Maintain documentation schedules and report progress to leadership
- Participate in project meetings and support transition planning efforts
- Communicate effectively with contractors, vendors, and VA staff
- Minimum 5 years of architectural experience
- At least 2 years of site investigation experience (healthcare preferred)
- Strong knowledge of:
- Healthcare design principles
- Building codes, fire/life safety, and accessibility standards
- Building systems across multiple disciplines (MEP, structural, civil, etc.)
- Ability to interpret and review construction drawings and specifications
- Skilled in field measurements and scaled drawing
- Minimum 2+ years experience with:
- AutoCAD (required)
- Revit (required)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Microsoft Project and Teams (preferred)
- NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards)
- PMP (Project Management Professional)
- EDAC (Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification)
- LEED Accreditation
- Detail-oriented with strong technical documentation skills
- Comfortable working both in the field and in design software
- Strong problem-solver who can identify and resolve discrepancies
- Effective communicator in a multidisciplinary, mission-driven environment
- Work on large-scale healthcare facilities serving Veterans
