Project Engineer – Marine Construction (Los Angeles, CA)
An established marine construction contractor is seeking a Project Engineer to support active field operations in Long Beach, CA. This role focuses on daily coordination with crews, tracking production, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.
The Project Engineer serves as a key liaison between field teams and office staff, supporting superintendents and foremen, maintaining accurate production records, and assisting with scheduling and material coordination. Depending on project needs, this role may also function as the Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) or Quality Control (QC) Manager on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects in compliance with EM 385-1-1 standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesQuality & Safety Compliance
Support enforcement of MSHA, OSHA, Corps of Engineers, and internal safety policies
Participate in and lead field safety meetings
Monitor field activities for quality and regulatory compliance
Maintain required documentation to support compliance standards
Field Coordination
Work onsite with superintendents and foremen to plan and execute daily activities
Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials for upcoming work
Communicate with project leadership and material suppliers
Verify field conditions and adjust plans for safety and efficiency
Production Tracking & Reporting
Maintain daily logs of crew activity, production quantities, and equipment usage
Track installed quantities for reporting and payment documentation
Monitor production progress and report variances
Surveying
Conduct progress surveys to verify completed work
Prepare cross sections and bathymetric documentation to support reporting
Scheduling & Planning
Assist with development and maintenance of project schedules
Identify potential delays and support mitigation planning
Additional Duties
Provide technical support for layout, surveying, and documentation
Assist with as-built documentation and progress photography
Projects may require extended out-of-town assignments. Lodging is provided. Weekend work may be required depending on project schedules.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
Minimum 5 years of experience in field/project engineering, construction management, or superintendent roles on marine or heavy civil projects
Valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record
Ability to obtain a TWIC credential
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam
Experience managing construction documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, contracts, and payment tracking
USACE Project Experience
Familiarity with EM 385-1-1 hazard and safety compliance requirements
Completed EM 385-1-1 training suitable for SSHO or QC Manager responsibilities
Surveying Experience
Hydrographic and/or topographic surveying
Experience using Hypack
Estimating
Experience preparing construction estimates
Familiarity with Heavy Bid software
Scheduling
Experience with Excel, MS Project, and Primavera P6
Frequent walking, bending, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as required
Effective verbal communication skills
Ability to climb in and out of marine equipment
