Chemical Engineer, Process Engineer
Department Summary
The Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) is a cross‑campus technology‑translation entity at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). ICM translates pioneering carbon management strategies from laboratory‑scale to pre‑commercial and commercial devices, prototypes, and software solutions. ICM focuses on: (1) Technologies for CO₂ removal (atmosphere and ocean), utilization, and avoidance, and (2) Technologies for creating new supply chains and processing approaches for critical materials and elements (e.g., Li, Ni, Co, Mn, Mo) essential to accelerating the clean energy transition and reducing the carbon footprint of extractive processes.
ICM’s action teams are convergent, agile, and world‑class, and have enabled technologies to win awards such as the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and the 2021 Liveability Challenge. ICM’s technologies are being commercialized through spin‑out companies, including Carbon Built Inc., Concrete‑AI Inc., and Equatic Inc.
The Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) seeks an Analytical Chemical Process Prototyping Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team developing sustainable and carbon removal technologies for global commercialization. The engineer will conduct chemical analysis, design, prototype development, and optimization of chemistry, reaction kinetics, process and plant design across bench, pilot, and commercial scales, ensuring successful operation while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
The role collaborates closely with diverse subject matter experts, focused on impact, schedule, and results.
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors such as budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.
Benefits begin on day one and include the UC Benefit package and UC Total Compensation Estimator to calculate total compensation with benefits.
At least two years of experience in chemical process design and analytical chemistry.
Experience with GC, SEM, XRF analytical analysis.
Experience with electrochemical systems and voltammetric analysis.
Experience with molten metal chemical reactors for methane pyrolysis to form elemental carbon.
Proficiency with PFD and P&.
Drafting experience or familiarity with CAD packages such as AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, or Draft Sight.
A self‑starter who collaborates effectively, communicates clearly, and drives progress.
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (preferred).
