Field Cost Engineer

We are seeking a Field Cost Engineer to support a major transportation infrastructure project in downtown Los Angeles. Reporting to the Project Manager and/or Senior Project Engineer, this role involves performing both routine and complex cost and estimating assignments. The position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of project reporting and cost control activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review owner-directed extra work documentation for completeness and accuracy
  • Develop scope of work packages including narratives, checklists, and quantity take-offs
  • Solicit subcontractor and vendor quotations and manage change order documentation
  • Analyze subcontractor/vendor proposals for scope accuracy (quantities, schedule, inclusions/exclusions)
  • Prepare price analysis sheets and cost proposals for client submission
  • Support development of cost and schedule proposals in coordination with operations teams
  • Assist with change order negotiations and finalize pricing and terms
  • Contribute to subcontractor/vendor agreements and procurement processes
  • Develop and maintain project budgets, including tracking costs, coding invoices, and monitoring progress
  • Manage multiple changes simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Interpret construction documents and define scopes of work
  • Coordinate subcontractor activities and monitor schedule completion
  • Review and manage submittals, RFIs, and construction work packages
  • Maintain assigned contract specification sections
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
  • 3–5 years of experience in heavy civil construction or cost/estimating roles (or equivalent combination of training and experience)
  • Knowledge of cost control techniques such as cost accounting and budget analysis
  • Understanding of construction systems, structures, and methodologies
  • Familiarity with construction safety standards and OSHA requirements
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to identify discrepancies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)
  • Experience with take-off and estimating software is a plus
Preferred Experience
  • Fixed price, design-build, or self-perform estimating
  • Government project experience
  • Experience with sitework, concrete, utilities, systems, or rail
