Overview
The Tooling Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all activities related to the maintenance, cleaning, preparation, repair, inventory, and performance of tooling equipment. This role leads tooling personnel, manages vendor relationships, maintains tooling records and inventory systems, and drives continuous improvement initiatives to maximize tooling reliability, efficiency, and performance.
Responsibilities- Tooling Operations & Leadership
- Lead and supervise tooling technicians, including scheduling, performance management, training, and safety.
- Coordinate tooling cleaning, preparation, maintenance, and repair activities based on production requirements.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient tooling area.
- Conduct regular tooling status meetings with Production, Process Engineering, and Maintenance teams.
- Manage tooling inventory and ensure accurate tracking of tooling availability and readiness.
- Coordinate tooling repairs and maintenance with external vendors.
- Request and evaluate repair quotations.
- Track repair timelines, costs, and vendor performance.
- Manage tooling-related spare parts inventory, including seals, bearings, breaker plates, heaters, hardware, and other critical components.
- Maintain accurate records within the CMMS (Ultimo).
- Participate in quality investigations, root cause analysis, Lean initiatives, Kaizen events, and process improvement projects.
- Develop and maintain tooling-related work instructions, specifications, drawings, testing procedures, and technical documentation.
- Lead efforts to digitize tooling records and transition manual processes to electronic systems.
- Research and evaluate new tooling technologies, suppliers, and best practices.
- Troubleshoot tooling failures and collaborate with Production and Process Engineering teams to improve tooling performance.
- Develop internal expertise in extrusion tooling and related technologies.
- Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable quality management system requirements.
- Maintain awareness of quality objectives, critical success factors, and departmental procedures.
- Support documentation and recordkeeping requirements related to tooling operations.
Required
- Bachelor s Degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience in tooling, maintenance, manufacturing, extrusion, metallurgy, or a related environment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical documentation.
- Experience managing tooling maintenance, repairs, and inventory.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- High sense of urgency with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred
- Experience with extrusion tooling.
- Knowledge of metallurgy and manufacturing processes.
- Experience using CMMS systems, preferably Ultimo.
- CAD experience, including Solid Works or similar software.
This role is well-suited for a hands-on manufacturing professional with experience in tooling, maintenance, extrusion operations, or mechanical engineering who enjoys leading teams, improving processes, and ensuring production tooling performs at the highest level.
