Lead Project Engineer – Hydraulics

Annual salary range: $112,000 – $164,000 per year. Salary is a general guideline and may vary based on skills, experience, and other factors.

This role requires on‑site work from Monday to Friday at the Los Angeles, CA facility. Relocation is not available.

What You’ll Do

The Lead Project Engineer – New Product Development will collaborate with Eaton Aerospace teams (Designers, Engineers, Fabrication, Supply Chain, Test Lab, and Integrated Product Teams) to support design, development, and implementation of fluid power and motion control system components throughout all phases of the product development lifecycle.

Position Overview

This technical project role is in the Mechanical and Project Engineering group. The engineer works with limited supervision, demonstrates leadership, communicates effectively, and adapts quickly to internal and external customer demands. Key focus areas include new and existing product designs of fluid power and motion control system components.

In This Function You Will
  • Lead technical design, analysis, and guidance for new product development and product improvements, including decision‑making authority for system and component design.
  • Collaborate with Integrated Product Teams to design, analyze, and implement product designs and improvements throughout the lifecycle.
  • Address product design, inspection, manufacturing, and test issues for vendors, operations personnel, and customers.
  • Plan, organize, control, and lead multiple simultaneous projects, creating and updating project schedules, and communicating status to Engineering Leadership and IPTs.
  • Resolve program scope change issues with Project Engineering and Program Management.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for cross‑functional teams and liaise between Engineering and internal/external customers.
  • Create and guide design standards, technical documents (engineering drawings following ASME Y14.5 & Y14.34), test procedures, reports, and review materials.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and coaching to team members.
  • Ensure standardization of product design and adherence to engineering processes across multiple projects.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and collaborate with managers on key goals and metrics.
  • Lead root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for product failures and customer‑returned hardware.
  • Participate in studies for cost reduction and first‑time yield improvements.
Qualifications Required (Basic) Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum five (5) years of Mechanical and Project Engineering experience, or a Master’s degree and minimum two (2) years of experience, in the hydraulic aerospace/automotive/vehicle industry.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience implementing hydraulic product design and testing in a manufacturing plant environment.
  • No immigration sponsorship required; all applicants must be U.S. persons under ITAR regulations.
  • Only candidates residing within 50 miles of the Los Angeles, CA facility (or active‑duty military service members) are considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in the aerospace or automotive industry.
  • Experience with Pro/Engineer, Enovia PLM, or similar 3D design and lifecycle management tools.
  • Experience designing hydraulic, pneumatic, or electromechanical products using advanced manufacturing techniques.
  • Application of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and tolerance stack‑up analysis.
  • Basic structural and/or performance analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), and RCCA principles.
