Join Blue Origin's In-Space Systems Team
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.
As part of a hardworking team of talented specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will join the Blue Ring Structures & Mechanisms Integrated Product Team. This role is integral to supporting Blue Ring, a high-powered hybrid solar electric and chemical-propelled spacecraft designed for unparalleled mission maneuverability, versatility, and capacity. Your skill in the design and analysis of spacecraft structures, and your ability to deliver safe, reliable flight hardware that meets requirements within allocated cost and schedule, will directly contribute to the future of in-space systems.
Passion for our mission and a commitment to quality are required!
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and classical hand calculations for strength checks of orbital vehicle structures and mechanisms.
- Collaborate with design engineers to optimize structural designs for weight, strength, and manufacturability.
- Document structural analysis to support the release of engineering drawings and formal documentation.
- Provide technical guidance on design concepts, balancing risk, cost, and performance.
- Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget, and technical status.
- Support other teams and team members with inputs for configuration development and trade studies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in an engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil).
- 3+ years of experience in vehicle structures or mechanisms analysis.
- Familiarity with classical strength analysis methods (e.g., Bruhn, Niu, Roark, Shigley).
- Ability to understand and build free-body diagrams for internal and reaction load derivation.
- Experience with one or more finite element modeling (FEM) packages (ABAQUS or Hyper Works strongly desired).
- Strong understanding of FEM modeling techniques, including boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, and both elastic and elastoplastic analysis.
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. degree in an engineering discipline with experience in spacecraft and/or launch vehicle structural analysis.
- Solid understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics (e.g., NDE methods, fail-safe vs. safe life, NASA-STD-5019).
- Experience with nonlinear finite element analysis and thermo-mechanical analysis.
- Proficiency with bolted joint hand calculations (e.g., bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out, NASA-STD-5020).
- Experience writing detailed design and analysis reports.
- Experience analyzing and dispositioning non-conformances.
