DescriptionPerform professional-level engineering work in support of Metro projects with the goal of achieving compliance with Metro standards, directives and project objectives. Recruitment timelines:

- Prepares workplans, drawings, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements, training requirements, specifications, estimates, and operational needs within Metro's standards and requirements
- Reviews and analyzes data, specifications, drawings, and blueprints, then makes changes or recommendations; negotiates changes with vendors
- Coordinates with technical consultants to review technical drawings and documents
- Coordinates projects for design, construction, and modification of Metro facilities with all parties involved, including internal agency employees, and outside contractors
- Oversees contractor/consultant work for compliance with schedule and budget
- Reviews new rules, regulations, and codes
- Prepares technical reports, feasibility studies, economic analysis, and correspondence
- Performs inspections on completed work
- Coordinates services with outside agencies
- Represents Metro with construction/engineering/supplier community
- Interviews or surveys users to understand needs and requirements for designs
- Writes Scope Of Work (SOW) for each project
- Responds to service requests to improve or repair existing designs or systems
- Inspects structural, system, or design damage after natural disasters or fires
- Maintains various files and records
- Interprets contract specifications, codes, and safety orders
- Provides guidance and assistance to new or entry-level employees in operating engineering systems, software, and equipment
May be required to perform other related job duties
Minimum QualificationsA combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering field;
Master's Degree in a related field preferred - Three years of relevant experience performing engineering work in appropriate discipline; some positions in this class may require specialized experience in area of assignment
- State of California registration as a Professional Engineer in the appropriate discipline desirable
- A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
- Microsoft Office Word 2010 and Excel 2010 Specialist preferred
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
- Theories, principles, and practices of engineering in applicable discipline, such as civil, mechanical, structural, electrical and electronic, or environmental engineering
- Fundamentals of architecture, design, construction, and equipment fabrication
- Telecommunication systems, microwave radio, and two-way radio
- Software applications as they relate to assigned engineering discipline, e.g., AutoCAD (Computer-Aided Design) and Visio
- Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations, including building and zoning codes
- Engineering mathematics
- Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
- Project management and control practices
Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
- Performing complex engineering work in assigned discipline
- Using computer-aided tools and products
- Communicating effectively orally and in writing
- Analyzing situations and data, identifying problems, and exercising sound judgment and creativity in making decisions

- Reading, understanding, and applying technical specifications, blueprints, drawings, documents, and instructions
- Mediating and negotiating
- Performing engineering calculations

- Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
- Prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
- Manage projects from start to finish
- Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
- Provide guidance and assistance to new or entry-level staff
- Travel to project sites, which may include sites located on tall buildings and mountains
- Read, write, speak, and understand English
