The Senior Cost Estimator manages comprehensive cost estimating services for large-scale capital projects, maintaining a complete understanding of the interrelationship between project scope, milestones, and the cost of labor, material, equipment, and productivity. This role requires specialized expertise to lead the successful delivery of complex estimating work for infrastructure and utility mega-projects.
Primary Functions & Duties- Analyzes blueprints, specifications, and technical documentation to prepare comprehensive time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
- Collaborates with engineers, architects, clients, and contractors to ensure estimate alignment with project scope and technical requirements.
- Utilizes advanced estimating software to calculate costs, organize data structures, and generate executive-level reports.
- Prepares detailed cost estimates across the entire project lifecycle, from conceptual planning to final construction.
- Establishes and maintains historical cost libraries to evaluate and benchmark future project costs.
- Identifies and quantifies specific cost drivers, including production rates, raw materials, equipment logistics, and labor expenses.
- Consults with vendors and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing, quotations, and market data.
- Assesses project risks and performs contingency analysis to incorporate necessary financial margins into the budget.
- Prepares and presents professional cost proposals and financial reports to senior management and external clients.
- Monitors project expenses against the established budget to identify, track, and report financial discrepancies.
- Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in project management and controls, with at least 5 years in a lead or senior estimating capacity for mega-projects ($100M+).
- Horizontal Breadth:
Demonstrated experience across the full project lifecycle, including planning, estimating, forecasting, scheduling, cost control, and project reporting. Must show a "true project controls" mindset by understanding how schedule shifts impact cost escalation and resource productivity. - Proven expertise in setting up complex project estimates and developing custom estimation tools or resources.
- Experience working with Government or Public Agencies in the Los Angeles region is highly desirable.
Skills:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel is mandatory
- Proficient in industry-standard estimating software, such as e-Builder, HCSS (Heavy Bid), and Bluebeam is a must.
- Experience with SAP and Primavera P6 is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational, technical, and team-building skills required to coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Construction Science Engineering (or equivalent professional experience).
- Must have at least one professional certifications: CEP (Certified Estimating Professional), CCEA, PE, or PMP.
