The Materials & Process Engineering (M&PE) Department within the Hardware Engineering Center is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for performing mechanical testing and designing fixtures to support development, design, and failure analysis activities for a different range of product applications. This position requires critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and meticulous attention to detail in executing procedures, testing, analysis, and documentation.
You will collaborate closely with design engineers, material engineers, and subject matter experts across various disciplines, managing and coordinating multiple tasks to meet schedule requirements. As part of a multi-disciplined team, you will contribute to solving complex technical challenges. What You Will Do
Perform hands-on mechanical testing using various laboratory techniques to evaluate material properties and design limitations
Develop test plans and set up test configurations for unique hardware applications
Assess materials for compliance with specifications and standards
Evaluate parts and hardware to ensure alignment with structural analyses and conformance to design requirements
Collaborate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and subject matter experts
Execute tasks with a high degree of attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and quality in testing, analysis, and documentation
Handle the physical demands of the role, which include the ability to lift up to 28 lbs
Manage and coordinate multiple analysis tasks simultaneously while adhering to schedule requirements
The Mechanical Engineer II job is in Tucson, AZ and the position is onsite.
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires A University Degree or equivalent experience
and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field.Experience in Instron or MTS load frames
Qualifications We Prefer
Proficiency with instrumentation and data acquisition equipment to support mechanical testing and analysis.
Experience using software tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, and PTC Creo for data collection, analysis, and design.
Familiarity with ASTM test methods for conducting mechanical testing.
Hands-on experience with general material testing and analysis using laboratory equipment.
Ability to write clear and concise technical reports to effectively summarize analyses and test results.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong communication, interpersonal skills, planning, and time management abilities.
ABET accreditation is preferred but not required; a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher is desired.
