Mechanical Lead – Central Plant & District Energy
About the opportunity
A well-established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is hiring a mechanical technical lead to head central plant and district energy work across its West Coast practice. The role sits at the front of the firm's decarbonisation portfolio — large-scale heating and cooling plants, campus-wide hydronic distribution, and central utility infrastructure for institutional clients.
You'd own technical delivery on these projects: setting design direction, coordinating across disciplines, and working alongside project managers on quality, commercial performance, and the client relationship itself. There's a genuine business-development component — shaping proposals, positioning for pursuits, and presenting at interviews — so this suits someone who wants influence over what the team wins, not just what it builds.
What you'll do
- Lead the mechanical design of central heating and cooling plants and large distributed hydronic networks
- Act as the technical point of contact for clients through design and construction
- Direct teams producing drawings, specifications, technical reports and client presentations
- Work with stakeholders and code officials to deliver integrated projects
- Mentor and develop engineers at all levels
- Contribute to pursuits and proposals for decarbonisation-focused plant and district energy work
What they're looking for
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or architectural engineering
- Active US PE licence (required)
- 12+ years designing building HVAC, with substantial central plant and hydronic distribution experience
- Steam systems experience is an advantage
- Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards
- A track record of winning work and holding long-term client relationships
- Demonstrated experience leading and growing technical teams
Nice to have: LEED AP or WELL AP; energy modelling experience (whole-building analysis, façade thermal, airflow).
Compensation
Base salary in the region of $155,000–$200,000 depending on experience, skills and office location, plus bonus, 401(k) with employer match, and a full benefits package.
