Overview

The Senior Accounting Manager oversees complex accounting operations and financial analysis to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the general ledger, month-end close, and financial reporting. This role manages daily accounting functions and supervises General Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll activities while leading month-end closing processes. The position is responsible for all fiscal audit activities and the implementation, documentation, and consistent application of strong internal controls across accounting functions.

Working closely with the CFO, Director of Finance, and designee, the Senior Accounting Manager supports compliance, operational efficiency, and the supervision and development of accounting staff.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees and directs the month-end close process, including the preparation, review, approval, and posting of complex journal entries, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Leads the comprehensive review and reconciliation of balance sheet and income statement accounts, ensuring proper classification, resolution of variances, and integrity of the general ledger and financial statements.
  • In partnership with the Finance team, manages Accounts Receivable functions, including oversight of weekly deposits, federal and state drawdowns, application of cash receipts, and proactive monitoring, communication, and resolution of uncollected receivables.
  • Prepares and analyzes monthly actual cash flow reports and weekly cash and investment reports to support cash management, liquidity planning, and executive-level financial decision-making.
  • Provides direct supervision, coaching, training, and performance evaluations of accounting and accounts payable staff responsible for daily operations, ensuring consistent compliance with GAAP, Federal Uniform Guidance, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Actively participates in external financial statement audits, funding agency audits, and regulatory reviews by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation; ensures audit readiness and timely response to auditor requests. Assist the Controller in the preparation of Form 990 and other tax-related filings, as applicable.
  • Collaborate with the Controller and Fiscal Systems Administrator to manage, maintain, and enhance the ERP/general ledger system, including user training, process optimization, and the implementation of automation initiatives and other enabling financial technologies.
  • Serves as a primary liaison with banking and financial institutions, internal departments, external stakeholders, and vendors, ensuring effective communication, issue resolution, and adherence to financial protocols.
  • Leads continuous improvement efforts to strengthen financial and management reporting, increase operational efficiency, and enhance internal controls and procedures in compliance with GAAP and Federal Uniform Guidance requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides overall leadership, direction, coordination, and evaluation of direct reports.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the agency’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training staff; planning, assigning, and performance expectations; conducting performance evaluations; employee recognition and discipline; addressing employee concerns and resolving issues.
  • Provides direct supervision to assigned staff in alignment with organizational needs and the scope of the position.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field required;
    Master’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting desired.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two (2) years of supervisory or management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
