Location: Chatsworth, CA

Reports To: Accounting Manager

Compensation

Position Summary

A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a Senior Accountant / FP&A to join its Finance team. This role supports both core accounting operations and financial planning & analysis, helping ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and meaningful financial insights to support leadership decision-making.

This position will play a hands-on role in financial statement preparation, general ledger management, and monthly close, while also contributing to budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting skills, nonprofit fund accounting experience, and the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and post journal entries and support full-cycle general ledger accounting
  • Own and perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and assist with month-end and year-end close
  • Prepare accruals, allocations, and adjusting entries in accordance with GAAP
  • Assist in preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Coordinate audit support schedules and respond to external auditor requests

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling activities
  • Prepare management reporting packages and perform variance analysis
  • Partner with operational leaders to analyze financial performance and support strategic decision-making

Controls & Process Improvement

  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and corporate accounting best practices
  • Assist in strengthening internal controls and segregation of duties
  • Document accounting procedures and support process improvements across the finance function

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff when needed
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve financial processes and reporting transparency
Qualifications

Required Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and/or FP&A experience
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting and fund accounting
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and corporate accounting best practices
  • Hands‑on experience owning financial statement preparation and accounting operations
  • Experience with internal controls, compliance, and process documentation
  • Experience preparing management reporting and financial analysis
  • Strong Excel skills and overall systems/ERP proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or lead junior staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with in higher education, university, or education‑related organizations
  • CPA or CPA candidate
    , or prior public accounting / public company experience
