Hiring for Occupational Safety Specialist I in Los Angeles, California About the Role
The Occupational Safety Specialist I supports the implementation and oversight of site safety programs, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, NFPA). This role drives accident prevention initiatives, conducts investigations, and promotes a strong safety culture across the organization.
Key Responsibilities Regulatory Compliance & Program Management- Monitor compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Maintain and manage the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database.
- Support Hazard Communication programs and ensure chemical inventories remain current.
- Assist in developing Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHA).
- Conduct incident investigations and lead root cause analyses.
- Monitor and trend incident and near-hit data; implement corrective actions.
- Lead post-incident review teams and ensure timely resolution of findings.
- Inspect contractor activities, tools, and equipment to ensure safe work practices.
- Promote and reinforce a proactive safety culture.
- Communicate safety updates via digital boards, portals, bulletins, and meetings.
- Support ergonomic program initiatives and improvements.
- Deliver safety training and technical documentation as needed.
- Provide safety oversight during annual shutdowns and major maintenance activities.
- Procure and distribute safety equipment for CAPEX/OPEX projects.
- Coordinate safety logistics across multiple sites.
- Support Emergency Response Team activities.
- Administer PPE programs (respirators, fall protection, prescription eyewear, safety shoes, hard hats).
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field.
- 2+ years of relevant safety experience required.
- Biotech or chemical industry experience preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and safety compliance.
- Strong investigation and root cause analysis skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to influence, coach, and collaborate across all organizational levels.
- Strong technical writing and training delivery capabilities.
