Definition

Performs ultrasonic examinations of patients and records images useful for the diagnosis of pregnancy and pathological conditions affecting various parts of the body.

Essential Job Functions
  • Selects the appropriate operating mode for the specific ultrasonic examination, selects intervals of body sections, manipulates the transducer, and selects and photographs ultrasonic images for diagnosis by the physician.
  • Conducts examinations of cardiac motions, recognizes abnormal conditions, and adjusts recording technique to obtain appropriate display. Such examination displays cardiac chamber size, motion of valves, and all parts of the heart.
  • Measures biparietal diameter and brain midline position from display echograms.
  • Conducts examination of pregnant patients to determine placental localization, fetal position, and multiple gestation, or abnormalities such as coexisting tumors.
  • Obtains images of internal organs with ultrasound techniques as an aid to differential diagnosis of cysts, abscesses and other pathological conditions.
  • Tests and records fetal heartbeat and adult vascular characteristics for evaluation with ultrasonic images by a physician.
  • Conducts fetal echocardiograms.
  • Checks the patient's history to anticipate effects of previous surgery, childbirth and other conditions on the ultrasonic image of internal organs.
  • Elicits the cooperation of patients, explains the procedure, and calms those who have fears regarding the examination.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements: Completion of a training program in diagnostic ultrasound technology
* or one year's experience in ultrasound techniques under the direction of a physician trained in ultrasound technology.

Physical Class III – Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10‑25 pounds.

Special Requirement Information: A certificate of completion in diagnostic ultrasound technology training program must be attached to your application at the time of filing, or within 15 days of filing online.
