Biosafety Manager

The Biosafety Manager provides organization‑wide leadership for biosafety, high‑containment, and vivarium safety programs. Serving as the designated Biosafety Officer (BSO), this role ensures biological research is conducted safely, in compliance with applicable regulations, and aligned with federal, state, NIH, CDC, and USDA requirements. The position oversees a team of EH&S professionals and works closely with faculty, staff, and researchers across the institution.

• Lead biosafety, high‑containment (BSL‑3), and vivarium safety programs
• Serve as Biosafety Officer (BSO) and subject matter expert for biosafety and biosecurity
• Act as ex‑officio member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
• Serve as Alternate Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program
• Serve as primary contact for regulatory inspections (NIH, CDC, USDA)
• IBC & Research Review
• Serve on the IBC and review a high volume of Biological Use Authorizations (BUAs)
• Oversee BUA reviews and research safety plan input
• Advise the IBC on biological risk mitigation best practices

• Oversee laboratory and animal biocontainment inspections
• Provide oversight of BSL‑3 operations and vivarium safety programs
• Manage the medical waste program
• Develop and maintain biosafety SOPs, exposure control plans, and policies
• Maintain the Biosafety Manual
• Oversee biosafety training programs
• Serve as on‑call responder for biological and hazardous material incidents
• Lead or support emergency spill and hazard response
• People Management
• Manage and supervise a team of EH&S professionals
• Oversee hiring, performance management, and work assignments

• Manage budget planning and financial oversight
• Oversee spending for equipment, training, and compliance needs
• Track expenses and prepare financial reports
