Senior CMDB Engineer

LHH is seeking a Senior CMDB Engineer to join our client's team in a full-time, hybrid role that can sit in Seattle, WA. Los Angeles, CA, or San Francisco, CA.

The Senior CMDB Engineer is responsible for defining and leading the strategy, governance, and continuous enhancement of automated discovery capabilities that support a highly accurate, complete, and trusted Configuration Management Database (CMDB). This role drives cross-functional collaboration to deliver comprehensive visibility across the IT ecosystem while establishing standards, controls, and optimization practices that ensure the ongoing integrity, reliability, and business value of CMDB data.

Job Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience) or equivalent professional experience CMDB experience.

5+ years of experience with IT discovery tools and CMDB platforms.

5+ years of experience with Service Now Discovery, ITSM, CMDB platform

5+ years of experience with Service Mapping, Scripting & Automation using JavaScript (for Service Now scripting) and Power Shell, Python, or Shell scripting (for custom probes/sensors or integrations)

Strong understanding of networking protocols (e.g., SNMP, WMI, SSH, HTTP/S).

Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).

Strong design and engineering experience with Service Now CMDB, Discovery and Service Mapping implementation and optimization.

Strong understanding of network topologies, firewalls, and subnets.

Application Integration REST/SOAP APIs and MID Server configuration and troubleshooting.

Ability to create and modify Discovery probes, patterns, and sensors

Knowledge of Windows and Linux/Unix Servers, Network Appliances, Enterprise Applications, Databases, Web Servers, and Cloud platforms.

Familiarity with various data sources for CMDB CI Ingestion (e.g., SCCM, Tanium, Intune, Discovery, Event Management, etc.), configuration and troubleshooting.

Familiarity with Identification & Reconciliation (IRE) rules.

Familiarity creating custom CI Classifications

Prior experience with Service Now CMDB implementation and stabilization, Event Management and Performance Analytics.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex data issues.

Experienced with ITIL practices and ITSM tools.

Experience in Agile project management methodologies.

Service Now Certified Implementation Specialist – Discovery or CMDB

Service Now Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification.

Core Responsibilities

Own and lead the CMDB data model strategy, including CI classes, relationships, hierarchical service models (CSDM), governance standards, naming conventions, attributes, and relationship patterns across on-premises and cloud environments.
Translate business and technical requirements into CMDB designs, models, diagrams, documentation, and enterprise architecture artifacts.
Administer and maintain the enterprise CMDB platform (e.g., Service Now), including core configuration and CI lifecycle management processes (create, update, retire).
Serve as the CMDB Discovery subject matter expert, establishing standards, methodologies, optimization strategies, schedules, probes, patterns, and rollout plans for automated discovery across cloud, on-premises, and network environments.
Own CMDB Discovery operations, monitoring job health, troubleshooting failures, resolving data discrepancies, and coordinating discovery implementations with stakeholders.
Define, implement, and maintain integrations between the CMDB and external systems, including monitoring, asset management, vulnerability management, cloud platforms, HR systems, security tools, and other enterprise applications.
Collaborate with infrastructure, platform, and operations teams on MID server and connector strategies, connectivity, performance tuning, and CMDB-related operational processes.
Design, implement, and maintain Service Mapping capabilities to accurately represent business services and dependencies.
Partner with Dev Ops and application teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines, application visibility, and automation into the CMDB where appropriate.
Identify, recommend, and implement automation opportunities to improve CMDB data accuracy, coverage, freshness, and operational efficiency.
Ensure CMDB data accuracy, integrity, completeness, freshness, and consistency through validation, reconciliation, duplicate management, discrepancy resolution, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Define, monitor, and report on CMDB data quality KPIs and governance metrics, including completeness, accuracy, relationship integrity, reconciliation success, and coverage.
