descriptionthe deputy city attorney iv works within the workers’ rights division. The division advises the bureau of contract administration’s office of wage standards and contract compliance, council offices and city departments on workers’ rights and related social policy issues.
duties and responsibilities- provide oral and written advice on worker protection laws, including the city minimum wage ordinance, city hotel minimum wage ordinance, fair work week, fair chance initiative, freelance worker protection, the abc test, and related labor laws.
- advise on the implementation and enforcement of social policies required of city contractors, such as the living wage ordinance, bid preference policies, business certifications, prevailing wage agreements, and labor peace agreements.
- collaborate with council offices throughout the legislative process to draft and implement ordinances that expand protections for private sector workers.
- assist in specialized litigation and administrative proceedings related to enforcement of city ordinances to combat wage theft.
- advise on the public records act, ralph m. Brown act, liability assessment, risk management, and perform other duties as assigned.
- valid license to practice law in all courts within the state of california.
- minimum ten years of experience practicing law.
- strong communication, research, and writing skills in complex areas of law.
- demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment.
- ability to work effectively with governmental agencies, public officials, departmental personnel, and members of the public.
- licensed to practice law in the united states district court for the central district of california.
- experience in wage and hour and employment litigation.
- experience advising public administrative enforcement agencies.
- experience drafting local ordinances and knowledge of the city charter.
- civil litigation experience (minimum of two years preferred) and experience in quasi-judicial administrative hearings by public bodies.
