About One Team Partners

One Team Partners (One Team) is a global leader in sports licensing, marketing, sponsorship, and media, specializing in commercializing group licensing rights for college and professional athletes. Established in 2019, One Team is a joint venture between the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), MLB Players Association (MLBPA), Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), MLS Players Association (MLSPA), and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Players Association (USWNTPA), with backing from HPS General Atlantic, and Morgan Stanley Tactical.

One Team represents the exclusive group name, image, and likeness rights for the playing members of these associations, as well as those from the NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA), U.S. Rugby Players Association (USRPA), League Championship Series Players Association (LCSPA), and thousands of college athletes. By leveraging the group IP and influence of these athletes, One Team creates value in games and interactive, consumer products, sponsorship, athlete and partner marketing, and content and media.

Location

We prefer candidates based in Los Angeles, CA. However, we are open to U.S. based remote candidates. Candidates based in Los Angeles will have the opportunity to work from our beautiful Santa Monica office 3x per week.

Role Summary

The Counsel of Business and Legal Affairs will provide legal advice in all matters with respect to business initiatives pursued by One Team. This position supports a broad range of general commercial matters, including licensing, media, marketing, and athlete-related matters, and business operations. A proactive, solution-oriented and collaborative approach, attention to detail and superior analytical skills are essential. Significant transactional experience is a must.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft, review and negotiate a variety of contracts across the One Team business such as:
    • retail, consumer product, and promotional licenses
    • sponsorship, brand partnership, player activation, and athlete relations
    • content production, broadcast and distribution, digital media, television and online programming
    • investments, mergers, and acquisitions
    • event-related (e.g., venue, hotel, event management, agency, talent) agreements
    • vendor, consultant, and services agreements
    • confidentiality, consent, release agreements and related form agreements
    • terms of use and privacy policies
  • Support licensing, marketing, gaming/interactive, and strategic initiatives by partnering closely with business partners to advance deals from intake through execution
  • Provide strategic, practical, and timely legal advice to business teams and advise on business risks and issues regarding contracts and other business initiatives
  • Track current litigations, legislation, and regulatory developments impacting One Team business, including athlete rights and the broader sports and media ecosystem
  • Assist in maintenance and organization of legal templates, forms and internal resources, including updates to relevant databases
  • Operate and maintain brand protection and enforcement program, including managing relationships for same with our shareholders
  • Assist with special projects for management, including with respect to Board meetings
  • Attend and represent One Team at various meetings, as requested
  • Advise on and oversee regulatory compliance matters and corporate policies
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Key Skills And Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree with excellent academic credentials
  • Background at a large law firm preferred, or otherwise at a recognized sports and entertainment boutique and/or in-house legal department with relevant experience
  • Admitted to at least one U.S. state bar, and in good standing to practice law
  • 3-5 years of transactional experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including strong critical thinking, interpersonal, and public speaking skills
  • Effective legal research, writing and analytical skills, with sound judgment and attention to detail
