Responsibilities
  • Plan, assign, supervise, review, and inspect the work of employees engaged in the maintenance, repair, testing, configuration, and installation of fixed, mobile, and portable radio communications and related equipment.
  • Monitor and participate in requisitions and orders for parts and supplies.
  • Coordinate with other units within the Department to plan and complete projects (e.g., installing and updating mobile radio equipment).
  • Share technical knowledge and expertise with other Departmental personnel.
  • Confers and consults with Department members and vendors, providing instructions on work techniques, equipment builds, equipment operations, repairs, maintenance, and technological developments.
  • Keep shop and work records and create productivity reports.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Plan and schedule equipment inspection and preventive maintenance.
  • Write employee performance evaluations.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform the work of an Electronics Communications Technician on an as‑needed basis.
  • Drive vehicles as part of job‑related testing, reviews, and inspections.
Requirements to Qualify
  • Three years of journey‑level experience
    * in the installation, maintenance, and repair of radio communications transmitting and receiving equipment.
Licenses
  • Valid General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
  • Valid California Class C Driver License required to perform job‑related essential functions; out‑of‑state applicants must provide a valid license from their state of residence and obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.
  • Successful applicants must obtain a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before appointment; the record must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked.
  • An applicant whose driving record shows three (3) or more violations within the last year will not be appointed.
Physical Class

Physical Class III – Moderate:
Employees must stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.

Other Requirements
  • Vision and color perception must be adequate to effectively and safely perform essential duties.
  • Journey‑level experience is defined as performing the full range and diversity of work independently and reliably in radio communications, equipment maintenance, repair, and installation.
Special Requirement Information

In order to qualify, applicants must submit a copy of their valid General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the FCC within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.
