Overview
A Sense of Home strives to prevent homelessness by creating first‑ever homes and a community for youth aging out of foster care. 50% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth. The homeless crisis can only end through prevention. Youth aging out of foster care are charged with the almost insurmountable feat of securing housing, finding employment, and quickly becoming self-sufficient all on their own.
In Los Angeles – the country’s most competitive market with one of the highest costs of living – the transition‑age youth (TAY) population is the largest. The cost of furnishings and household goods is higher than ever, stretching the limited means of foster TAY and their children even further. Without basic home furnishings, foster TAY sleep, sit, study and eat on bare floors, which directly contributes to homelessness, housing instability and perpetuates the cycle of poverty.
The Community Engagement VISTA will recruit up to 25 volunteers to transform empty apartments into warm, fully furnished homes for aged‑out foster youth throughout LA County, building a sustainable volunteer program that ultimately supports housing and resource navigation.
Recruit, train, and manage volunteers for Home Creations. Coordinate logistics for furnishing apartments and maintain relationships with community partners. Serve as a launchpad for A Sense of Home’s housing and empowerment programs.
