Job Description

The Behavioral Health Charge Nurse oversees clinical functions related to the delivery of patient care, the quality of nursing practice and the standards of care for the assigned shift. Directs patient care activities by assigning staff and functions on the unit based on the Charge RN’s assessment of patient needs and the relative skills and abilities of staff, while maintaining clinical nursing practice skills and unit specific expertise.

Performs professional nursing duties that incorporate psychomotor and age‑appropriate cognitive skills of the patient/family/significant other to assess, plan, intervene and advocate for the patient on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. Ensures break relief and provides coverage for the shift, troubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise, functions as a role model and clinical resource to staff and patients.

Supervises and directs staff RNs, LVNs, and Mental Health Workers in their daily job functions and provides input to the Administrative House Supervisor regarding employee counseling, evaluation, scheduling and discipline. Reports directly to the Administrative House Supervisor.

Responsibilities

$20,000 Sign‑on Bonus

  • LEADERSHIP
    :
    Provides continuous supervision of staff RNs, LVNs, and Mental Health Workers on the unit. Provides direct patient care as needed. Responsible for input to the House Supervisor regarding patient medications, treatments and procedures that meet scope of practice and nursing standards. Recognizes changes in patient condition, responds appropriately, and documents interventions. Ensures that hospital patient care standards are met, collaborates with the health care team, intervenes and advocates as needed.

    Intervenes in abuse, assault or neglect, and makes referrals.
  • PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL PRACTICE
    :
    Oversees and coordinates daily unit operations, resolves issues based on experience and judgment. Demonstrates advanced clinical expertise, strong leadership and collaborative skills. Assigns daily tasks based on staff competencies, ensures acuity coverage, and provides input for RN coaching, training, counseling and performance assessments. Assists with hiring decisions, interviews, orientations and training.
  • PLAN OF CARE
    :
    In conjunction with treating physicians develops long and short‑term goals, incorporating patient preference and discussing the plan with the patient. Assesses patient condition, directs staff to engage pain management resources and other interventions, supports RNs with ongoing assessments and documentation. Reviews test results, identifies critical results, communicates timely and correlates data into the plan of care. Ensures evidence‑based practice, HIPAA compliance, and infection control procedures.
  • COLLABORATION
    :
    Collaborates with staff, physicians and other team members to coordinate and manage care. Supervises, monitors and delegates patient care activities, provides leadership and ensures safe, high‑quality care. Acts as a source of information, provides resources, guidance and education regarding treatment plans and medications. Develops and implements accurate teaching and ongoing discharge plans.
  • COMMUNICATION
    :
    Empathizes with patients and support systems, demonstrates care appropriate to age, culture, and background. Engages in caring behaviors, ensures staff demonstrate ownership and thoughtful actions in interactions with patients, families, physicians and coworkers.

Required Qualifications
  • Active, current, and unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • AHA Basic Life Saving.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Understanding of patient classification and staffing requirements for the patient population.
