Job Overview

The Assistant Nurse Manager, in collaboration with and under the direction of the Department Nurse Manager, is accountable for ongoing leadership and operations of the assigned area(s) and for nursing care safety and quality. The role involves guiding the daily provision of nursing services to patients and families, participating in quality improvement activities, and supporting comprehensive patient and family services through effective interdisciplinary team engagement.

Duties
  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Collaborate with the Department Nurse Manager to provide leadership for nursing staff and the interdisciplinary patient care team to support high‑quality care of patients and families. This includes measurable outcomes such as increased patient satisfaction, decreased healthcare‑associated infections (HAI), timely incident report follow‑ups, and other applicable metrics.
    • Act as a role model and steward of the organization’s vision, mission, values, and service excellence standards by applying the Professional Practice Model.
    • Instill Keck values in staff and hold them accountable to the standards of service excellence and professional nursing practice.
    • Maintain positive, collaborative relationships with peers, management, physicians, and patients/families to ensure patient‑centered care.
    • Share responsibility for nursing process and outcomes, providing staff performance coaching, action‐plan development, and supporting evidence‑based practice decisions.
    • Encourage staff input and decision making, and provide opportunities for professional growth, including conferences, certifications, and educational advancement.
    • Oversee performance management, creating individualized action plans to help staff meet or exceed quality, performance, and organizational goals.
    • Promote cohesive work teams and constructive conflict resolution, actively supporting intra‑ and inter‑professional teamwork within the department.
    • Keep knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and quality of care.
    • Maintain clinical competence and serve as a Super User as needed.
    • Address quality concerns and intervene to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff, including comprehensive reviews of reportable events.
    • Supervise care delivery, maintain high visibility and accessibility to patients/families and staff through purposeful rounding and timely follow‑up on quality, performance, and behavioral issues.
    • Monitor staff compliance with bedside reporting and communicate information to staff in a supportive, timely, and understandable manner.
    • Provide coverage for the Department Manager and other departments in their absence.
    • Ensure timely completion of incident report follow‑ups (SRMs).
  • Operational & Resource Management
    • Collaborate with the Department Nurse Manager on personnel, workplace, and technology resources necessary for safe, high‑quality patient and family care.
    • Oversee daily department operations, supervise and coordinate patient assignments based on staff competency and acuity levels.
    • Use staff engagement survey data to develop action plans for workplace improvement.
    • Provide input on additional personnel, workplace, and technology resources; assist with recruitment, selection, interviews, and paperwork.
    • Conduct 90‑day and annual performance evaluations, managing progressive discipline when appropriate.
    • Monitor supplies and equipment adequacy, adjust par levels, and advocate for additional supplies as needed.
    • Advise on technology resources for patient care and support ongoing usage.
    • Promote reflective leadership, self‑appraisal, and peer review to support professional development.
    • Maintain membership in at least one professional organization, participating on key practice issues.
    • Ensure documentation and quality reports meet regulatory requirements and follow up on changes.
    • Ensure timely completion of employee injury reports and respond to Code Triage.
  • Knowledge & Innovation
    • Apply new knowledge and innovation to advance department‑level improvements.
    • Contribute to department and organizational planning for education programs, meetings, committees, and professional initiatives.
