Position Summary
The Assistant Nurse Manager is a skilled and experienced professional Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the management of patient care. Reporting to the Emergency Department Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager has primary responsibility for day shift to be determined but typically at a minimum to be present during the majority of the day shift hours.
The role encompasses development of staff competency through assessment and education, compliance with regulatory and professional standards, improvement of quality, service levels, safety, customer satisfaction and collaborative relationships. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and supporting its strategic plan.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships in dealing with peers, physicians, and other customers to promote efficient teamwork and high‑quality patient care. Interpersonal complaints are remedied in a mature fashion, establishes strong rapport and professional relationships with all department staff, maintains appropriate interdepartmental communications, and identifies/intervenes with interdepartmental problems promptly at the assistant manager level.
- Participates in hospital committees, unit‑specific multidisciplinary conferences, and unit staff meetings; distributes staff meeting minutes in a timely manner.
- Implements unit‑specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completes monitoring forms, and reports findings to the Manager/Director and Quality and Performance Improvement Committee.
- Models leadership and promotes professionalism to assist staff in developing priority setting, teamwork, flexibility, coordination of activities, organizational skills, delegation, and behaviors consistent with the MLKCH mission, vision and values.
- Facilitates patient progress through the health‑care system: assists staff in identifying patients’ specialized needs, finds appropriate resources, intervenes in interdepartmental patient‑care issues, advises staff in developing patient plans of care, coordinates with the House Supervisor for staffing, and initiates, coordinates, and directs ACLS/PALS protocols in the unit.
- Works with the Emergency Department Nurse Manager to complete the schedule for unit(s) in Clairvia, ensuring adequate coverage at all times to meet regulatory requirements.
- Maintains standard of care by monitoring staff activity and adjusting assignments as needed; monitors orientee activities, assists preceptors in enhancing orientee experience, handles difficult orientations, delegates patient‑care tasks, assigns admissions and transfers, monitors patient care, and provides feedback on practices.
- Holds staff accountable for the care of assigned patients; ensures staff education; confers with staff, makes rounds on patients during the shift as needed; audits patient charts/records for compliance; assesses patients’ and families’ responses to nursing care; performs specialized technical skills related to specific clinical patient populations.
- Ensures compliance with the Emergency Severity Index scales according to standards; utilizes professional judgment and data to make staffing decisions and communicates decisions to the staffing office, Emergency Department Manager, and/or Sr. Director as needed.
- Participates in the hiring process, which may include reviewing applications, interviewing applicants after the Manager’s/Director’s initial screening, completing interview documentation, and making recommendations regarding staffing needs and skill mix.
- Counsels staff members as indicated by performance or behavior, utilizing progressive discipline steps in collaboration with the Emergency Department Leadership Team; documents counseling per prescribed procedures, maintains an objective relationship with staff, identifies issues promptly, and ensures staff counseling occurs during the same shift or the next working shift;
