Overview
The Registered Nurse provides therapeutic care to patients within an interdisciplinary team using the nursing process. The role includes coordination of patient care, education, documentation, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals in a compassionate, supportive environment.
Responsibilities- Assessment – Complete Nursing Assessment at admission, each shift, and with changes in condition; complete patient acuity by 0200/1400 daily.
- Diagnosis – Interpret assessment information to formulate Nursing Diagnoses.
- Plan – Develop Plans of Care with individualized interventions, document expected outcomes, and review/update daily.
- Intervention – Administer medication and IV therapy per schedule; perform patient care procedures correctly; delegate tasks appropriately; act as patient advocate; manage restraint use; ensure MD orders; ensure patient monitoring; complete Restraint Audit Form each shift.
- Documentation – Complete all flow sheets and chart forms accurately (Admission Assessment, Pain scale, Daily flow sheet, Restraint flow sheet, Diabetes, Educational, Kardex Care Plan, Risk Assessment, Fall, MAR, Equipment & Supplies, Transfer forms, Belonging Tracking); transcribe and sign orders; perform 12h/24h chart checks.
- Education – Provide patient/family education, room/unit orientation, Plan of Care education, and use MICROMEDEX information.
- Transfer & Discharge – Collaborate with Case Manager/physician for discharge planning; complete transfer paperwork; ensure belongings accompany patient.
- Equipment – Utilize patient care equipment safely (IV pump, feeding pump, PCA pump, epidural pump, sequential compression device, wound VAC, heating pad/pump).
- Communication – Report shift-to-shift, physician rounds, MDP rounds, hand‑off reports, facility email, student/new employee contract employee communication.
- Organization & Time Management – Prioritize responsibilities, manage breaks without overtime, complete shift on time.
- Regulatory Compliance – Follow National Patient Safety Goals, universal protocol, pharmacologic reconciliation, clinical alarms, hazardous waste, HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO readiness, hand washing, body mechanics, electrical safety, infection control.
- Management of Specific Patient Populations
- Medical-surgical patients (THA, TKA, spinal surgery, cystic fibrosis, organ transplants, hepatic encephalopathy).
- Intensive Care Unit/S – advanced therapeutic modalities, hemodynamic monitoring, CRRT, CVVHD, ventriculostomy, intracranial pressure monitoring, ventricular assist devices, balloon pumps, open heart, lung transplant, transplant surgeries.
- Stepdown/Telemetry – high acuity monitoring (ventilator care, arterial/CVP lines, ventricular assist devices, lumbar drains).
- Dialysis – initiate, perform, terminate treatments per policy; conduct safety checks and machine maintenance; coordinate orders.
- Psychiatric – engage in therapeutic interactions, maintain therapeutic milieu, assess contraband, participate in treatment planning, medicate psychotropics after consent.
- Behavioral Restraints – Apply de‑escalation techniques; use restraints or seclusion when necessary; monitor and obtain physician assessment; notify manager; debrief with patient if appropriate.
- Quality Measures – Identify patients fitting Core Measure criteria, complete documentation, participate in data collection and process improvements.
- Professional Development – Participate in hospital/nursing activities, committees, unit projects, research, precepting.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN); grandfathered from BSN if hired prior to 12/2019.
- Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing; specialized/technical training.
- 1 year Acute inpatient hospital experience as RN.
- Excellent communication skills; speak, read, and write English proficiently.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions; ability to perform duties including blood collection and apheresis per policies.
