ICU Nurse, Nurse Practitioner
Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner is a member of the intensive care team and has a primary responsibility of managing critically ill complex patients in a cardiothoracic ICU setting. The NP specializes in the unique cardiothoracic ICU environment, performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, conducting approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and consultations, prescribing interventions and medications, and providing direct patient care according to established protocols and evidence‑based standards.
Responsibilities- Manage critically ill complex patients in an intensive care setting.
- Provide care for high‑acuity patients requiring specialized monitoring.
- Develop individualized plans of care with appropriate interventions and perform patient‑care procedures correctly.
- Conduct in‑depth interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform physical examinations, and interpret findings.
- Identify and treat patient diseases and manage hospitalized patients.
- Perform or order diagnostic studies and interpret results, including lab studies, consults, and approved procedures.
- Develop and implement short‑term and long‑term treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians.
- Perform procedures such as specimen collection, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection.
- Write orders that increase, decrease, or change medication, subject to physician checking and counter‑signing.
- Prescribe appropriate interventions and medications while providing direct patient care in the ICU setting.
- Maintain records of patient progress, update charts, change orders when needed, and notify physicians of changes.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological issues, and medication use.
- Ensure compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, infection control, and regulatory agencies.
- Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations, providing leadership to the organization and nursing profession.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing school (MSN).
- Five years of clinical nursing experience.
- Two years of cardiothoracic ICU experience as an NP or RN.
- Experience with ECMO, VAD, IMPELLA, and IABP devices.
- Ability to intubate patients (or willingness to learn once trained).
- Capability to manage critical situations and code responses.
- Registered Nurse (RN) – California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Nurse Practitioner (NP) – California Board of Registered Nursing.
- NP Furnisher – California DCA (Current license to furnish medications).
- DEA Certificate for Schedule II‑V controlled substances.
- National Board Certification in NP specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
- For acute‑care hospital/ambulatory settings: ACNP or AGACNP certification from ANCC or AACN (or grandfathered status if hired before 12/2015).
- BLS certification (American Heart Association).
- ACLS certification (American Heart Association).
- Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City – if no card upon hire, must be obtained within 30 days).
Hourly rate range: $77.64 – $127.00.
