Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Director, Nursing & Operations, Perioperative Services, the incumbent will work with the other leaders to develop strategies, plans and outcomes to best meet the needs of all stakeholders, including clinicians and staff. Standards and policies as well as Human Resources are available when guidance is indicated.

The Unit Director of the ASC is responsible for the fiscal, human resources, clinical, materials management, and communication operations of the nursing/outpatient units. The Unit Director, ASC’s professional role description is based on ANA’s Nursing Administration’s Scope of Standards and UCLA’s Nursing Professional Practice Model.

The Unit Director, of the West Valley ASC oversees all aspects of operations. The incumbent shall support workflow optimization for staff and patients. The primary responsibilities include:

  • Support creating capacity and volume of surgical cases
  • Direct supervision for the clinical nurse manager for the OR/GI/SPD, the clinical nurse manager of the PTU/PACU, and the business office staff including a focus on coaching to develop problem-solving skills that will maximize quality, efficiency, and throughput
  • Facilitate the hiring of open/vacancy clinical positions
  • Support education, operations, and maximize communication with staff through various methods including weekly staff meetings, daily huddles, active daily management rounds
  • Support the clinical nurse leaders through challenging situations, focusing on coaching and support to develop their leadership skills
  • Create and manage plans for increasing efficiency, and improving quality.
  • Review and support the onboarding plans for new hires, and cross-training of staff into services
  • Assist in development and implementation of staffing plans, fiscal management, and monitoring environmental safety
  • In collaboration with the Medical Director and Scheduling department, work with clinical nurse leaders who review and approve the OR/ GI schedule. Support creating capacity and volume of surgical cases
  • Review and enhance clinical processes and workflow to meet the needs of surgical departments and divisions. Develop collaborative relationships with surgical department and division CAO and chairs/leaders to obtain regular feedback. Bring ideas and processes for improvement to the Director, Medical Director, Director, Nursing & Operations, and Executive Director Operative Services
  • Engage with staff and create strategies to improve retention and staff satisfaction
  • Work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists and nursing staff to improve quality and patient care metrics using evidence based best practice
  • Optimize daily workflow by assessing work assignments. Engage with the Charge Nurse and Nurse leadership team to optimize the efficiency of the department and support throughput as necessary
Job Qualifications

• Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree required, one of which must be in Nursing

• Minimum of 5 years of OR and/or PTU/PACU experience and 2 years management experience

• BLS from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

• Skill to independently scrub and circulate in multiple service lines preferred

• Skill in implementing appropriate nursing interventions on a consistent basis

• Ability to develop, implement and evaluate workflows, seeking continuous improvement

• Ability to communicate effectively and have knowledge of UCLA policies

• Ability to interpret metrics and utilize to improve quality, safety, and efficiencies

• Experience with AAAHC and JACHO

• Experience with managing budget, negotiating with vendors, and balancing financial budgets

• Experience working in a union environment, preferred
