Overview

Under the leadership of the Nurse Manager/Associate Director/Executive Director (Nurse Leader), the Assistant Nurse Manager coordinates the daily twenty-four (24) hour operations of the assigned unit/area to provide high quality, individualized patient care in support of Medical Center philosophies. The Assistant Nurse Manager functions as the Department Supervisor and an experienced clinician, assuming responsibility for the expert application of the nursing process and the delivery of patient care.

The role identifies and removes barriers to patient flow in collaboration with organizational leaders and facilitates discharge planning and team rounding as applicable. The Assistant Nurse Manager demonstrates professional skills, exemplary leadership, and educational abilities to direct and supervise clinical performance, evaluate care interventions and outcomes, and drive change within Nursing at the department and institutional levels. The role shares knowledge, assesses educational needs of patients, family, and staff, and promotes accountability for achieving departmental patient safety goals.

The Assistant Nurse Manager ensures nursing staff on assigned units perform within their scope of responsibility and duties, maintains accountability at the facility, department, and position levels, and ensures knowledge of required clinical/technical skills consistent with the Nurse Practice Act, Title 22, Joint Commission standards, plans for provision of nursing care, plans for care to patients, and other regulatory requirements. Additional management responsibilities include compliance with the National Patient Safety Goals, quality improvement, clinical care delivery processes;

staffing, scheduling, retention, safety and quality management; participation on unit practice council and TCAB. In coordination with the Nurse Leader, the Assistant Nurse Manager assists with administrative processes for the assigned units, including human resources, unit-based budgeting, evaluation of patient care resources, staffing, quality improvement planning, strategic planning, and educational development programs. The Assistant Nurse Manager mentors, coaches, and holds staff accountable for development and professional growth, supports research, participates in strategic planning, and ensures patient advocacy.

The role provides operational and leadership support to staff and evaluates the effectiveness of patient care resources. It also manages staffing effectiveness, including overtime usage, meal and rest break compliance, and staff attendance. The Assistant Nurse Manager conducts performance evaluations, oversees skills and competencies, and collaborates with the Nurse Leader on recruitment and retention activities.

Responsibilities include coordinating 24/7 unit operations to deliver high-quality patient care, supervising clinical performance, removing barriers to patient flow, facilitating discharge planning, and participating in unit practice councils and quality improvement initiatives.

• Education
• Bachelor s Degree in Nursing - minimum
• Master s Degree in healthcare, nursing or healthcare administration - preferred

• Experience
• 5 years minimum experience in an acute care setting, including two (2) years in specialty and supervisory roles - minimum

• Licenses and Certifications
• RN State License

• Basic Life Support (BLS) - Upon Hire minimum
• Other Competencies as required by the specialty unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS) - Upon Hire minimum
