Position Overview

The Pre-Op Nurse Practitioner (NP) works under the direction of the Department's Administrative and Medical Directors to facilitate safe and efficient operational flow of the cardiovascular patient population at Keck Medical Center. The NP applies the nursing process, supervises clinical practice, provides education, leads, and manages patient care. The role functions as part of inter‑professional teams, communicating with physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, clinical nurse specialists, and other nurse practitioners.

Outpatient duties include cardiac clearance for established cardiology patients, pre‑transplant evaluation, and independent evaluation of general cardiology patients. The NP may also support Cardiovascular Medicine physicians, assist in triage, coordinate care, and participate in the telemedicine program.

Essential Duties

Conduct in‑depth interviews with patients and/or families, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform physical examinations, and identify patients’ diseases (e.g., post‑implant VAD care, heart failure). Manage hospitalized patients using critical and strategic thinking, with effective organizational and time‑management skills.

Identify patient educational needs and provide health‑related information to enhance understanding of medical condition and related treatments; obtain informed consent for procedures; instruct and counsel patients and families about medical and psychological issues.

Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.

Develop and implement long‑ and short‑term treatment plans.

Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection‑related conditions.

Write medication orders (increase, decrease, change) subject to physician checking and counter‑signing.

Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.

Identify and record pertinent progress, update and summarize charts, modify orders when appropriate, and notify responsible physician of changes in condition.

Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical and psychological issues, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

Serve as clinic lead (resource for RN, LVN, and support staff) and liaison with governmental agencies such as the CDC and NIH; assist with research projects and obtain IRB approval for treatment protocols.

Research community resources for patient referral and refer to appropriate resources based on medical needs.

Maintain compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection control, and accreditation and regulatory agencies’ requirements.

Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Nursing or a related field.
Minimum three years of experience as an NP; at least two years in general cardiology, cardiothoracic, or cardiac surgery.
Excellent communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing).
Knowledge of medical procedures, whole blood collection, and apheresis procedures in accordance with clinical policies and regulations.

Required Licenses & Certifications

Registered Nurse – RN (California DCA) with a current, valid license.
Nurse Practitioner – NP (California DCA) with a current, valid license; ACNP, AGACNP, FNP, ANP, or AGNP required.
DEA Certificate for Schedule II‑V controlled substances.
National Board Certification in a Nurse Practitioner specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
Basic Life Support (BLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if not obtained upon hire, must be completed within 30days.
