Position Overview
The Pre-Op Nurse Practitioner (NP) works under the direction of the Department's Administrative and Medical Directors to facilitate safe and efficient operational flow of the cardiovascular patient population at Keck Medical Center. The NP applies the nursing process, supervises clinical practice, provides education, leads, and manages patient care. The role functions as part of inter‑professional teams, communicating with physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, clinical nurse specialists, and other nurse practitioners.
Outpatient duties include cardiac clearance for established cardiology patients, pre‑transplant evaluation, and independent evaluation of general cardiology patients. The NP may also support Cardiovascular Medicine physicians, assist in triage, coordinate care, and participate in the telemedicine program.
- Master's degree in Nursing or a related field.
- Minimum three years of experience as an NP; at least two years in general cardiology, cardiothoracic, or cardiac surgery.
- Excellent communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing).
- Knowledge of medical procedures, whole blood collection, and apheresis procedures in accordance with clinical policies and regulations.
- Registered Nurse – RN (California DCA) with a current, valid license.
- Nurse Practitioner – NP (California DCA) with a current, valid license; ACNP, AGACNP, FNP, ANP, or AGNP required.
- DEA Certificate for Schedule II‑V controlled substances.
- National Board Certification in a Nurse Practitioner specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if not obtained upon hire, must be completed within 30days.
