As an integral part of the interdisciplinary nursing team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic perioperative care to a specific population of patients. The perioperative RN designs, coordinates, and delivers care to meet the identified needs of all patients during the perioperative phase, applying knowledge of procedural and intraoperative experience throughout the patient care continuum.
Core Responsibilities- Assesses, diagnoses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates the outcome of nursing interventions based on standard care criteria.
- Monitors and manages patients’ physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual responses to the surgical experience.
- Provides peer education, patient/family teaching, support, reassurance, advocacy, environmental control, and resource coordination.
- Maintains asepsis, monitors physiological and psychological status, manages aggregate patient needs, and supervises ancillary personnel.
- Explores preoperative conditions, validates current practices, and integrates care across settings and disciplines through collaboration and consultation.
- Adheres to Universal Patient Safety Goals, labeling medication conventions, and safety standards for magnetic, laser, radiology, and intraoperative MRI.
- Correctly performs the surgical time‑out procedure and follows the Universal Protocol.
- Operates autoclave/sterilizer equipment, documents usage with appropriate paperwork, and updates preference cards.
- Communicates patient information to all staff using SBAR during hand‑off and about patient care and flow.
- Documents patient charges, implant records, pathology specimens, and preoperative records accurately and timely in the Cerner system.
- Performs instrument/sponges/sharps counts, upholds policies including Title 22 and JCAHO standards, and follows USCUH collaboration principles.
- Demonstrates respectful teamwork, delegation, and professional practice through participation in nursing committees, research, policy development, and unit‑based improvement projects.
- Maintains specialty carts, ensures instruments and supplies are organized, cleaned, and at par levels, and supports the suite’s daily readiness.
- Facilitates smooth surgical flow by preparing equipment, updating preference cards, and coordinating with surgical teams.
- Participates in hospital and departmental quality improvement activities and performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent. (Grandfathered from BSN if hired prior to 12/2019.)
- One year of operating room nursing experience in an acute‑care setting immediately prior to application.
- Two years of recent outpatient surgery experience.
- Excellent communication skills in spoken, read, and written English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures, in accordance with administrative and clinical policies.
- Valid California Registered Nursing license and CA Board of Registered Nursing registration.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Experience with a variety of surgical specialties and the use of perioperative technology.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City) – Must be obtained within 30 days of hire and renewed as required.
The hourly rate range for this position is $44.00 – $95.00.
