The Registered Nurse III (RN III) in the Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory is an experienced procedural nurse responsible for providing direct intra-procedural nursing care during complex cardiac electrophysiology procedures. Working collaboratively with electrophysiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiovascular and radiology technologists, and anesthesia staff, the RN III ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care throughout each procedure.
This role is primarily focused on procedural nursing responsibilities within the EP Laboratory, including circulating, scrubbing, procedural documentation, patient monitoring, and supporting anesthesia care. The RN III also serves as a clinical resource, mentors team members, and promotes best practices, patient safety, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Perform circulating nurse responsibilities for a wide range of electrophysiology procedures, including diagnostic EP studies, catheter ablations, cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implants, lead revisions, lead extractions, left atrial appendage occlusion procedures, and other hybrid procedures performed within the EP Laboratory.Complete real-time procedural documentation in the electronic medical record, ensuring accurate recording of medications, implants, procedural events, supplies, and patient status.Function as a scrub nurse while maintaining sterile technique and supporting procedural efficiency.Continuously monitor patient physiological status and promptly recognize and respond to changes in condition.Collaborate closely with anesthesiologists by assisting with airway management, procedural preparation, medication administration, and other intra-procedural support activities within scope of practice.Support preparation and operate specialized electrophysiology equipment and coordinate room readiness to support efficient case flow.Maintain a safe procedural environment through adherence to infection prevention standards, radiation safety practices, medication safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.Participate in emergency response during procedural complications, including cardiac arrest, airway emergencies, bleeding events, and device-related complications.Communicate effectively with physicians, anesthesia providers, and procedural staff to ensure seamless team coordination.Support room turnover, equipment readiness, inventory management, and continuous workflow improvement.Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, regulatory readiness activities, performance improvement projects, and evidence-based practice efforts.Qualifications
Education
- Assoc. Degree/College Diploma Nursing - minimum
- Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (state accredited program) - preferred
Licensure & Certifications
Current California Registered Nurse license.Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.RCES, CCRN, CVRN-BC, or other cardiovascular specialty certification preferred and required within one year of hire.Experience
Minimum three years of acute care nursing experience required.Minimum two years of recent experience in an Electrophysiology Laboratory, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Interventional Cardiology, or Critical Care setting preferred.Experience scrubbing complex cardiovascular procedures strongly preferred.
